Speaker: KAY WEATHERALL President of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Association EVERYONE WELCOME Business Ladies; Randy Scott, Mens Division; Jannette Peters and Kawartha Downs news by Grant C Wade The action is fast and furious at Kawartha Downs in 1990, both on the track and at the mutuel win- dows. In just twenty-one days the number of 2:00 miles has reach- ed 57 while last year's record was only 111. In the same 21 dates, the handle has surpassed the 1989 total for the same period by $407,638. The horsemen continue to put on a great show, and the fans are responding with the wagers. Dan Clements had quite a week as he posted six victories on the two cards (four of them on Satur- day). The two wins on Thursday included the $2,500 claimer with Backyard Gossip, a five year old daughter of BG's Bunny who claimed her first win in a couple of seasons. She paced a 2:02.2 trip for owner-trainer Dale Moncrieff of Peterborough. That combina- tion also won the last race of the week with Madams Choice, a five year old daughter of Jonquil Hanover. She took a new mark of 1:58.4 for owners Ronald and Ed- na Moncrieff of Peterborough. Clements also won with Chablis Lobell on Thursday. The four year old Fortune Teller gelding broke his maiden for owner Tammy Rose of Newmarket with a 2:01.2 clocking. The other two wins on Saturday were Prince Lee Acres owned stock. Tracing, a three year old Albatross filly paced a 2:02 trip in the non-winners of two races while Cams Venture and Cams Shadow (co-owned by Tor- resdale Stable of Mississauge) won the non-winners of five races in 1:57.3 and the Not Listed Preferred in 1:55.3 (fastest mile of the '90's at KD). Cams Ven- ture's trip was a new mark for the three year old Cam Fella Colt. The other double winners on the week were Allan Nicholls and Wayne Dowson. Both did their winning on Thursday with Nicholls adding a third victory on Saturday. The wins for Nicholls on Thurs- day included Fleet Mac with a 2:03.1 performance and Maple Turn to Page 34 When Reg Philip went to the Port Perry Curling Club last Thursday evening, he thought he would be talking to the exec- utive about the provincial school championships slated for next February. But the Mens, Ladies and Business Ladies Divisions of the Club had otherideas. They presented him with a framed Micheal Dumas print "China Gold." And the reason? After 23 years as co-ordinator of the school curling program in Port Perry, Reg has decided to step down. . The presentation was the Club's way of saying "thanks for the commitment and all the work over the years." "It came as a real surprise, and a very pleasant one. When you are doing something you en- Joy, you really don't e tore- ceive a gift like this," he said in aninterview later. Mr. Philip, who learned his curling when he was a student in Port Perry in 1959, took over the program when he was teaching at PPHS in 1967. "The school was looking for somebody to co-ordinate the program and I volunteered," he said. School curling in Port Perry has been very popular and successful. Many of the the club's top curlers these days got their start as students, some- thing that Mr. Philip finds grat- ifying. "I think it is one of the fin- est sports that young people can be introduced to. It's reasonably priced and lasts a lifetime," he said. Though he's stepping aside as co-ordinator of the school curling this fall, Mr. Philip will remain actively involved in the plans by Port Perry to host the Provincial Elementary School Curling championship Febru- ary 22-24. There will be 32 teams from all over Ontario curling at both Port Perry and Uxbridge Clubs, and a great deal of work must go into the organization of this event. This will be the first time Port Perry has hosted the cham- pionship, and Mr. Philip is look- ing forward to this new chal- lenge.
