POLITICAL RUMBLINGS It came as a surprise to me a week or so ago when Sam Cureatz announced that he was getting out of politics. After all, he had just been acclaimed a month earlier to carry the Tory banners in the provincial election, which will likely be September 13, though the date has not been made official. Sam has represented Durham East for 14 years, and he was well liked in this riding. He managed to stem the Liberal tide and hold the riding in the last election, and oy things no doubt would have been a lot tougher this time around, | think Sam could have held it again. But | really can't blame him for deciding now is the right time to get out. Fourteen years is a long time, and any politician worth his/her salt is on "duty SO to speak seven days a week, any hour of the day or night. It's a tough grind, and Sam feels he wants to spend more time with his kids, who are at an age where they need to see more of their dad. like Sam, have had a good working relationship with him and found him always accessible. And | appreciate the fact he gave me a call on a Monday morning to let me know of the retirement an- nouncement. He was going to hold a press confer- ence on a Tuesday, but since the Port Perry Star printing schedule is first thing Tuesday morning, we would have had the story a week late. By calling me a day ahead of time, the Star was able to carry the story the day he made the an- nouncement public. That's the kind of guy he is. I wish him luck in his "new life after politics." And as Sam exits, Scugog Township councillor Marilyn Pearce (Ward 2) has announced that she will seek the Liberal nomination for the up-coming elec- tion. Personally, I'll be sorry to see Marilyn leave mu- nicipal politics, if she wins the nomination and goes on to win the Durham East riding. | haven't always agreed with Marilyn's stand on a few issues since she was first elected to Scugog council in 1989. But I'l tell you this about her. She works hard, she does her homework, she's up on the issues, and she's not afraid to stand o and be counted. | admire that in a politician, even if | don't always agree with the position. | wish her well in her bid to and if she does, in her bid to win seat at Queens Park. | don't think it's any great political secret that Da- vid Peterson is going to return to office with a majority after the next election. If that happens and if Marilyn is successful, it never hurts a community to have a sitting member in a majority government, and in Marilyn's case, a mem- ber with some solid Liberal Party connections. So, good luck to you, Marilyn, and if you should get elected, first thing you do is tell David Peterson that we need this and that and a whole bunch of other things right here in Scugog Township, OK? TO THE DOME It took me a year after the place first opened, but | finally made my first trip to the Skydome. A friend called late one afternoon to say he had some extra Blue Jay tickets for the game that evening. | was apprehensive. It was getting close to 6:00 PM and | thought that setting out by car for the Dome at that hour, we might see the last two innings. Much to my surprise, my son Matt and myself were safely in our seats in time for the opening pitch et the nomination, urham East and a at 7:35. | paid $2 to park in a nearly empty lot near the St. ain Market, then or a cab that took us right to the front door of the Dome (cab fare was $7) We found the right gate easily and had no trou- ble finding our chairs. After hearing all the horror sto- ries about driving to the Dome etc., | was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was for us. Ninety minutes after leaving Port Perry, we were watching the Jays clobber the Angels. | was impressed with the Dome (who isn't) but our seats (behind third base) were way up their in nose bleed country. Second last row from the top in Level Five. To say that we were a long way from the field is an un- der-statement. Perfect view, just a long way from the action. And | don't think there's any more leg room in the Dome than there was at the old Exhibition Stadium. People were still tripping over my feet when they got up to fetch a beer. | don't like to nit-pick, but the steps leading to our seats were very steep and very narrow. Taking a nas- ty tumble would have been an easy thing to do, even for a mountain goat. On the plus side, we waited just a few moments for a hamburger at the McDonald's Restaurant, and the mezzanine in front of the restaurant offered a splendid view of Toronto Islands and the lake. The walk back to the car took just over 20 min- utes and we were home to Port Perry a few minutes by midnight. On balance, a nice first trip to the Skydome. | might just do it again some time.
