28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 14, 1990 Young riders to compete at World Games Six Canadian pony riders de- parted Friday for Swansea, Wales to compete in the World Mounted Games. Ten countries are participat- ing in the event hosted by the Mounted Games Association of Great Britain. Mounted games, which are similar to the Prince Phillip Games, are played by young adults between 15 and 21 years of age. The Canadian team has prac- tised together twice a month IF YOUR AD WAS HERE Over 20,000 people could have read it this week. That's a lot of potential customers for your business. For Advertising Made Easy call the PORT PERRY STAR 985-7383 since May and is hoping to im- rove on its third place finish ast year. Suzanne Robinson of Ash- burn has two daughters com- peting for Canada in the games. She told the Port Perry Star the competition will be tough for the Canadian contingent. This nation has only one mounted games team, while some countries have several teams to choose from. "Great Britain has 64 or 68 teams," Mrs. Robinson said. "We play their top team." Each team consists of five players and a reserve. Mrs. Robinson said a reserve mem- ber is often needed because it is easy to get injured while com- peting in the speed and skill games which are played on po- nies. As an added challenge to the games, all participants will be riding unfamiliar ponies which are provided by the host associ- ation's members and friends. "Every four to five games the riders will switch ponies so they don't even have time to get used toit,"" she said. By leaving on August 10, the players will have just enough time to get over jet lag before the week-long games begin on August 12, After the competition, the team will spend one week tour- ing Great Britain. Mrs. Robinson said the team hopes to do well in the Great Britain competition because some of the members may then be invited to participate in the World Individual Mounted Games in Malvern, Worchester from August 25-30. The Canadian team, coached by Trevor Atkinson of Aurora, consists of Victoria Robinson of Ashburn, Tasha Falkenham of Myrtle, Tanya Dervent of Whit- by, Julie Schmidt of Toronto, and John Snider of London. Re- serve is Heather Robinson of Ashburn. Coach Atkinson's mother, Carol, is chairman of the Mounted Games Association of Canada. "Thereisa ibility that we may be asked to host the 1991 games," Mrs. Robinson said.
