(People Against Costly Taxes) of Uxbridge Township, we would like to address Mr. Hvidsten's ar- ticle entitled Falling Behind (referencing Uxbridge Township's new municipal office). Mr. Hvidsten asks "why can they afford these facilities that we apparently can not?" We (the Uxbridge Township Taxpayer) can not afford a $1.5 to $2 million new municipal building. We are driving on deplorable roads, but we will have a brand new municipal building to go into to complain. St. Joseph school was purchased as an ideal loca- tion for future growth at a "'pro- jected' cost of zero dollars to the taxpayer - according to our coun- cil - however over the last few months that 'projected cost" seems to be escalating. Mr. Hvidsten comments "that Uxbridge doesn't appear to have a negative attitude about We (taxpayers) feel that this new building is being forced upon us and in the end the taxpayer will pay dearly. M.P. Ross Stevenson says in his booklet "If we don't put the tax on such things as electricity, then we'll have to pay a higher tax on other items, we buy and use."' Even funerals are being taxed by this wasteful money-hungry govern- ment. People have a choice what they buy, and pay tax on, but elec- tricity is an absolute necessity. The cost to Ontario hydro users -- an estimated $660 million a year. Stevenson says "It wouldn't be Snpropeiats to increase the GST here to give electricity users special treatment" -- some treat- ment! Stevenson concludes "that would provide an unfair advan- tage to those who heat their home electrically." Hydro has already announced an increase starting Jan. 1st of about 12.8%. With the GST that makes it about 19.8% in- crease. Adding insult to injury, Premier Peterson is adding the 8% sales tax on top of the GST, making it over 16%. If the Mulroney government wants to cut the huge deficit it created, how about cutting the $1.4 billion for French this year (last year $500 million). With the seditious Bloc Quebecois doing all in their power to break up the country, while still on the Mulroney gravey train, the need to further appease Quebec by learning French proves the folly for what it has always been -- wasteful stupidity. Even worse, a most divisive threat to national unity. Even Trudeau has admit- ted it was a mistake, and is not working. The latest blow is the $19.9 million Ottawa is spending by in- stalling 82 telephones to answer questions on the GST. They have already spent $500,000 on public hearings and the Senator admit- ted to those presenting their case against the tax that they were go- ing to shove it through regardless of their opposition to it. Now thats democracy? I am told that they are already adding the GST on automobile in- surance for the period starting Jan. 1st. Also on airline tickets and travel booked after Sept. 1st for trips in the new year, even if paid in full in advance. The. Mulroney gov't has increased taxes some 30 times since coming to office. Now they want blood. In a letter to me, Finance Minister Wilson admitted under ques that '"Total expen- ditures on official languages pro- grams were in the order of $589 million for 1988-89." Wilson did not in his letter of July 6 1990 ever mention the $1.4 billion for French announced by Senator Lowell Murray in early 1990. Wilson's own figures state that every Canadian family has federal $34,200 debt over our heads. Pension payouts to M.P.'s first elected to the House of Commons Sept. 4 1984 could reach to more than $2 million for some M.P.'s as is the case of Bernard Valcourt, better known for his motorcycle accident while impaired. Others like Barbara McDougall (Im- migration) will get $1,145,518 for serving only six years and living to be 75 years old. Don Boudria (Lib-Ont.) will get $1,278,664. Just . a few examples how taxpayers are being ripped-off. To paraphrase Sir Winston Churchill, never in history have so many been taken in by so few. The latest insult to Canadians. While about 700 Canadians are be- ing held by the Iraqi government, the wimps in Externam Affairs has done nothing to stop a reported 1,500 Iraqi landed im- migrants in Canada who have volunteered to return to Iraq and join the army.
