Of these, Durham Regional Police recovered 869, but were only able to return 269 to their rightful owners. On Thursday of last week Constables Mike Bevan, and Peter Wraight were at the Scu- gog Memorial Library to offer the free service of registering bikes to area residents. The new program entitled Bike Back was invented hoping to promote the importance of registration, and to convince more riders to register their bike. The bikes that are not re- turned to owners are sold at a police auction. Police would like to return more of the bikes, which would be an easier task if more cyclists participated in the registration program. The reason so many bikes are sold, and not returned to their ownersis because most people's descriptions of their bikes are far too general. The majority of bike thefts oc- cur during the summer months, and are usually just taken for a short joy ride and quickly "dumped" into a nearby ditch, or creek. Police estimate that only about 20 per cent of bikes are registered. This figure comes from the fact that only one in five that are found display the registration sticker. This only amounts to 25,000 bikes in Dur- ham Region that are using the program. The registration includes a special identification sticker which is placed on the frame of' the bike, and the serial number of the bike is then keyed into the computer. The cost for reg- istering a bike is free. The Oshawa Optimist Club donated a computer to police to make the job quicker to identify ihe owner, and return it to im.
