Proxy application forms available Qualified electors who are unable to cast their ballots in per- son on the days of the advance polls, or on election day may do 80 by proxy if they fall under cer- tain categories. Proxy voting is possible for a qualified elector who is a member or spouse or child of a member of the Canadian Forces; employed in the business of long distance transportation; committed to business activities or employer's directions; those physically in- capable, because of medical reasons, of attending a polling place; a student duly registered at a recognized educational in- stitution; those participating in a job training or retraining pro- gram; or an inmate in a penal or correctional institution. To vote by proxy, the elector authorizes another qualified elec- tor in the same electoral district to cast the vote. A qualified elec- tor may not act as proxy for more than two electors. Proxy application forms may be obtained from any Returning Officer throughout the Province. The completed form, naming the proxy voter must, however, be certified by the Returning Officer in the electoral district where the person appointing the proxy resides. The deadline for the cer- tification of proxy votes is 8:00 p.m on September 5, 1990, the day Phoenix, Raines before election day. Persons eligible to vote in this election are those who, on election day, are 18 years of age or older, a Canadian citizen, and have resided in Ontario for the six month period prior to election day, and whose names are on the list of electors or on a certificate to vote in the electoral district where they reside. 4-H members excel A new 4-H Inter-County Dairy Judging Competition was held on August 8 and 9 at the University of Guelph for 4-H members from across Ontario. Barclay Phoenix of Greenbank and Robert Raines of Sunderland represented Durham West at the competition and tied for 5th place team out of 38 teams competing. Applications for farm assistance by Joel Bagg, Agricultural Representative (Acting - Durham West) Application forms for the Farm Income Assistance Program are now available at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food office. This program is designed to reduce the cash flow burden resulting from high interest rates and week commodity prices. Farm corporations, partnerships and sole proprietorships can apply. - The program has two components: 1. INTEREST ASSISTANCE To qualify, farms must have gross farm sales reported for tax purposes of at least $15,000 during the fiscal year ending in 1989. The grant is 25 percent of the interest paid in excess of $5,000 during that same fiscal year and reported for tax purposes. The maximum interest assistance grant is $3,000. 2. GRAIN & OILSEEDS: Eligi- ble crops grown in 1989 include grain corn, silage corn, soybeans, wheat, beans, mixed grain, oats, barley, canola and other grain and oilseeds. The payment is $5.80 per acre for these crops. Further information can be ob- tained by contacting the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
