An Uxbridge businessman who was turned down in his bid to get an FM radio licence to serve Durham Region says he may try again. Robert Marshall was one of 11 applicants who applied to the Canadian Radio and Tele- communications Commission (CRTC) to operate a station us- ing the 92.3 FM frequency. The CRTC awarded the fre- start a country music station serving the Toronto area. Marshall's application was the only one of the 11 which would have kept the station serving Durham Region, where it was originally assigned by the Federal Communications De- partment. In a statement released af- ter the CRTC decision, Mar- shall said he still believes Dur- ham Region is "under-served" by local radio. Marshall's application called for an "adult contempo- rary FM station serving an 18- 45 year old audience in Dur- ham." In turning down Marshall's application, the CRTC wrote "because of the scarcity of un- used FM frequencies in the To- ronto area, its objective is to PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 21, 1990 -- 27 Uxbridge man may try for another Durham radio licence maximise the benefits that the public would derive from any new station." In his own statement, Mar- shall said last week he's con- vinced Durham Region now can support a contemporary FM station. "We are currently explor- ing other alternatives which could serve the Region with a lo- eal well-targeted radio service." Marshall and his partners were not the only ones dispap- pointed that the CRTC handed the station to a western compa- ny to play country music. There has been strong crit- cism in Toronto that the fre- quency should have been as- signed to a station there that would target the West Indian community with a format of dance music and reggae. quency to Rawlco Communica- tions of Calgary, who plan to 4-Hers compete in judging and Go For Gold | competitions by Barbara Weese, R.O.S.
