St im 32 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 21, 1990 This past week-end saw the Port Perry Canadian Tire Ban- tam Fastball team travel to Kitchener-Waterloo to participate in the Ontario 1990 Summer Games. Joining the coaches Ron Redman, Bob Vander Slagt, Wayne Venning and players Jeff Card, Gavin Cochrane, Jason Cochrane, Jasen Dawson, Grant Kay, Steve Laird, Jody Logan, Scott MacLennan, Jason McBride, Brad Moase, Ryan Picard, Todd Smart, Darrell Vander Ligt, Darrell Vander Slagt, and Chad Venning were 3100 other athletes and coaches. On Thursday afternoon, the coaches and team members ar- rived at the University of Waterloo campus along with par- ticipants in 16 other sports such as archery, basketball, canoeing, field hockey, lacrosse, rugby, soc- cer, sailing, tennis, track and field, volleyball and baseball. The Port Perry Bantams were hous- ed at Village 1 Complex, South Quad, and were soon settled in. Meals were provided by the University, starting with a barbe- que on Thursday evening at Seagram Stadium, breakfast and supper at the Green dining area on campus, and box lunches brought to all the athletes at their place of participation. The Port Perry Bantams played all their games on the diamonds in Budd Park, Kitchener. On Friday evening, all the athletes were privileged to be in- volved in the opening ceremonies held at Centennial Stadium in Kit- chener, This event started with all participants marching in before a Linsey Card (top photo, right) and Shannon Brown were winners of the sports events held this month at the Cedar Shores Regatta on Scugog Island. Frisbees, golf, balloon toss and blind-folded canoe races were all part of the fun that day which concluded with a corn roast. And organizers are already planning for 1991 on August 4. large crowd of parents and fans, plus a TV audience. Various entertainments were organized by the Summer Games commit- tee over a 2 hour program time, which ended with an impressive fireworks display. While waiting to march into the stadium, the Port team had the opportunity to meet many athletes from across Ontario par- ticipating in the various sports events. The team especially remembers the female softball team from London who were stan- ding in line next to them, wearing outstanding pink uniforms! Port Perry's first game was Friday morning at 9 a.m. against a team from Bracebridge. Chad Venning pitched a strong game allowing only 4 hits. This match was eventually won by Port Perry in the first inning of overtime with a score of 2-1. Chad struck out 3 batters and walked only 1. Driv- ing in the runs were Jason and Gavin Cochrane with 1 RBI each. The second game of the day turned out to be an exciting over- time game won by St. Clements in the bottom of the 9th by a 1-0 score. Jeff Card pitched an ex- cellent game, allowing only 3 hits, striking out 7, and walking only 1. This was an intense close game which could have gone either way. Unfortunately, Port Perry could not get any of the 11 strand- ed runners across home plate, especially in the 9th inning. In the third game played on Saturday afternoon against In- nerkip, Port lost by a 6-5 score. Even though 5 batters crossed home plate, again 11 runners were left stranded. Chad and Jeff allowed 10 hits, struck out 5, and walked 3. Port started strong, and were ahead 5-2 at the end of the second inning. They were cruising along for a win until Innerkip struck for 4 runs in the 5th to go ahead 6-5. They did not allow Port to score any more runs, even though there were 3 runners on in the 6th and 7th. A hard line drive in the 7th by Steve Laird which would have brought in the tying run was caught by the right fielder on his knees. Driving in the runs were Brad Moase with 3 RBIs, and Jason Cochrane with 2 RBIs. This loss eliminated Port Perry from the Summer Games, and from any advancement into the medal rounds. Each game they played had been decided by 1 run, so in spite of the loss, Port cer- tainly was competitive. The whole event was a privileg- ed experience which will be remembered by all players and coaches for years to come. It is not often you see 3100 athletes together in one place to par- ticipate in their sport. The 1990 Summer Games Committee needs to be commended for a first class, highly organized four day event which seemed to be free of any real problems. The hitters for the weekend were: Brad Moase with 5 singles, 1 double, 1 triple and 3 RBIs, Jason Cochrane with 2 singles, 1 double, and 3 RBIs, Gavin Cochrane with 3 singles and 1 RBI, Jason McBride and Jody Logan with 2 singles each, Jeff Card, Scott MacLennan, Darrell Vander Slagt, and Chad Venning with 1 single each. Stranded runners cost Bantams Marie Vanderwater and Vera Brown won the Peter-' brough and District Best Ball tournament recently. And they didn't let a bit of rain bother them. (see story) . Well, actually it was a more than just abit of rain. But Marie and Vera put the weather out of their minds as the won the Annual Peterbo- rough and District Four-ball (best) stroke competition. And they were the first team from Sunnybrae in Prince Albert to ever win this OLGA event. But it wasn't easy. Under a handicap system for scoring, they finished with a total of 62 for 18 holes, and that put them into a four-way tie for the lead. One of the other leading teams declined to head out for the playoff because of the in- clement weather. Marie and Vera played steady golfon the second playoff hole to capture first place. For their winning efforts, they brought home a trophy that will be displayed at Sunny- brae for a year, keeper plaques and a couple of nice prizes. Almost the entire round was played in a steady rainfall, and when the playoff began, it was really coming down "cats and toga." "The secret is just not to let the weather bother you," said Vera. Last year, Marie and Vera teamed up to finish fifth in this same event, which attracted close to 50 teams from as far away as Peterborugh, Sutton, Whitby and Oshawa. While Vera and Marie brought home the hardware, two other teams from Sunny- brae did well enough to finish in the prizes.
