| Kirk Kemp is running hard to keep the riding of Durham East for the Conservatives. Kemp' made a swing through Port Perry last Friday, stopping first at his local com- mittee room at 36 Water Street before heading out to do some old-fashioned door knocking. Despite the late morning heat that was pushing the mer- c into the high 80's, Kemp said he enjoys the door-to-door canvassing. "I'm an apple farmer, and I do a lot of walking on the farm. I'm used to it and I enjoy it," he told the Star in a brief inter- view. He also said he's very pleased with the response he's been getting while canvassing in the riding of Durham East. The fact that Liberal pre- mier David Peterson called the September 6 election with still two years remaining in his term, is one of the issues that Wi on Kemp has been stressing in the campaign. And he said he is finding that people agree the election is un-necessary at this time. "Yes. I would say there is a bit of a back-lash" (over the ear- ly election call) But he added there appears to be a degree of public cynicsm over the political process at all levels. Kemp is 31, and though he has worked in the past for the Durham East Conservative candidate Kirk Kemp was In Port Perry last Friday and Sat- urday for some main-streeting and door-to-door canvassing. Kemp, 31, from the Bowman- ville area, was nominated after incumbent Sam Cureatz announced his surprise retirement. And Kemp Is running hard to keep the riding for the Conservatives. The fact that he is young is not working against him. On the contrary, he said, people are telling him it's refreshing to see a younger person seeking office. Kemp, a fine athlete who excelled in basketball, soccer and hockey (all-Ontario Junior C title with Bowmanville Ea- gles and drafted by Oshawa Generals) is attacking the cam- paign trail with a lot of energy and vitality. . And for his round of door- knocking in Port Perry on Fri- day, he did away with the usual .jacket and tie, opting for a casu- al shirt and slacks and soft shoes that are easier on the feet. Kemp said there are some local issues of concern to him in Durham East riding. He is adamant that the rid- ing must never be designated a site for dumping garbage from Metro Toronto. "We are prepared to take care of our own waste, but we don't want Metro's," he stated. And he is also concerned about the possible location of the new multi-lane Highway 407 that someday will connect Highway 404 in the west with 115in the east. Kemp said the initial pro- posed routes for this major highway are too far south and will cut across too much prime farmland. He wants to see the pro- posed route moved to the north, closer to the ridges. Kemp and the four other candidates seeking election in Durham East will be on stage together to-night (August 21) at the Christian High School, Scu- gog Street, Bowmanville for an all-candidates meeting.
