| | { | | | i MP Building slowdown continues in Scugog Scugog Township contin- ues to feel the effects of the na- tion-wide slowdown in the con- struction business. Though the number of building permits issued by Scu- gog in July picked up slightly over previous months, construc- tion activity this year is lagging far behind 1989. A report issued by the Township building department shows that up to the end of July, there have Furie 211 permits worth $12.7 million. The dollar value is just slightly over half the $24.6 mil- lion in permits during the same six month period in 1989. And last year to this date, Scugog had issued 334 permits. The biggest slump this year GRADUATE "3 . Yammy Joanne ~ Vanuden, daughter of Fred and Marg Va- nuden, graduated June 16, 1990 from Sir Sanford Flem- ming College of Applied Arts jnd Technology with a diplo- a as Social Service Worker. Tammy is presently attending New Tribes Bible Institute in Jackson, Michigan. GE ) Please recycle this newspaper Sq J is in construction of new single family dwellings. There have been 55 per- mits taken out to date, worth $8.3 million. Last year to the end of July, there were 120 permits, worth $18.4 million. The number of permits for additions and alteration has also tailed off this year. The value of the permits to date has been $1.5 million, com- pared with $2.9 over the same seven months last year. In the farm and industrial \sector, the Township has issued just seven new permits this year worth $418,000. Last, year, the total was 15, worth $1.9 million. The value of permits issued for garages, car-ports and swimming pools is just about at the same level as last year." But there are a couple of bright spots in 1990. Permits for commercial buildings total $697,000 to date, up over last year's total of $511,000. And the Township has is- sued permits worth $742,000 for additions and alterations to commercial premises, a signifi- cant improvement over last ear when the value was - $268,000. If the month of July is any- indication, the second half of 1990 may show some improve- ment, perhaps as people build now to beat the GST due to kick inJanuary 1. Permits in July this year totalled 46, Jes one short of July 1989. The value was $2 million, pred with $2.3 million last July. There were nine single family dwelling permits, same as last July, worth $1.3 million, just slightly lower than last July. ¥ Local businesses that de- pend on construction are hoping that the next four months show amarked improvement over the first half of this year.
