Staff and politicians New region appointments Politicians and regional staff at Durham were doing the re- onal shuffle during Wednes- ay's meeting. Because of the recent provin- cial election and retirements, several positions at the region had tobe filled. Port Perry resident and Pe- terborough County medical of- ficer of health, Dr. Robert Kyle, was appointed as Durham Re- gion's medical officer of health. Dr. Kyle replaces Dr. Jean Gray who retired last fall. Oshawa physician Steven Gold will continue as acting medical officer of health until Dr. Kyle takesoverondan. 2,1991. Vic Silgailis, engineering di- rector at the region's works de- partment, will take over as commissioner of works next spring. He will succeed Bill Twelvetrees who is taking ear- ly retirement. Mr. Silgailis has been with the region's works department since Durham's inception in Teen fight From Page 1 _ "The group that was sup- posed to show up, didn't show up," he said. "Cooler heads will have to prevail. This community doesn't need this sort of thing," he stated. 7 And he promised that the Durham Police will continue to monitor the situation carefully in the weeks ahead. Two weeks ago, there were threats of racial violence at a high school in Pickering. That incident got the atten- tion of Durham Region council, and chairman Gary Herrema is calling for the establishment of a community race relations task force. 1974. Before that, he worked for the City of Oshawa for 12 years as works operations di- rector. Oshawa Mayor Allan Pilke has resigned his position wit the city and as regional council- lor after being elected as a member of provincial parlia- ment in the Sept. 6 election. Mayor Pilkey was one of two members of Durham Region council who have sat on the gov- ernment body every year since its inception in 1974. Oshawa councillor John Aker is the oth- er. After his landslide victory to provincial politics, many people are predicting Mayor Pilkey will be appointed to the cabinet -- probably as minister of mu- nicipal affairs. Oshawa regional councillor Al Mason has been appointed mayor of the city. Mr. Mason's regional seat is now occupied by Oshawa city councillor Mar- yanne Sholdra. : Regional council also shook up the committee membership. Ajax Mayor Jim Witty left the finance and administration committee to fill the seat left vacant by Mayor Pilkey in the planning committee. Oshawa councillor Nicholson picked up Mayor Witty's finance seat, while Mar- yanne Sholdra replaced Mr. Nicholson on the health and so- cial service committee. Brian Two possible dump sites in Cartwright From Page 1 Hall said the firm had 75 possi- ble sites, but through process of elimination they cut that num- ber down to 12 and then to five sites. The mayor said regional offi- cials, including Chairman Gary Herrema and waste manage- ment chairman John Aker, were kept in the dark about the locations. When contacted by The Star on Friday after the information was published, Ward 4 council- lor Glen Malcolm said he was "shocked" to learn his ward had been selected at all. He said having two sites within the ward was a "double torture" to his constituents. "The farmland is just too good," Mr. Malcolm comment- ed. "It is some of the best farm- land in Cartwright." He said the region should have stipulated to the engi- neers that no one area should have two candidate sites within its boundaries. "It's not fair," he said. Mayor Hall said that since the announcement had been made to regional council he had gone to the Cartwright lands in question. "The places I looked at ap- pear to be good farmland," he told the Star. He said it was unfortunate and understands that the an- nouncement would be traumat- icfor the landowners. "I don't want to see people get hyper," Mayor Hall said. "It's possible neither of these sites will be selected." Approximate locations of the other candidate sites are on Re- gional Road 23 on the Whitby/ Pickering boundary; on the Newcastle/Oshawa boundary; and in Newcastle.
