20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 25, 1990 Meals on Wheels Week salutes volunteers "It's a wonderful feeling to be a bright spot in someone's life!," said Alex and Margaret In- am. "Assisting people to maintain their dignity and independence in their home is a worthwhile objective," they feel. Last year, 43,000 volunteers across Ontario actively shared this philosophy. They showed their concern for their neigh- bours by delivering 2,000,000 hot, nourishing meals to 66,000 Salyud Panyun, and Christina Antonick, two particl- clients who are not as mobile as they once were. Community Care is part of this provincial network which grows larger each year. It has approximately 60 volun- teers in this community who gave 888 hours last year. Meals on Wheels Week is cel- ebrated annually to recognize these dedicated volunteers who deliver a cheery "Good after- noon...Meals on Wheels...How are you today?" with each meal. ga » 7 pants in the Canada World Youth exchange helped deliver meals on Wheels last Friday as part of their community ser- vice. HIGHWAY 7A & QUEEN STREET (across from the Beer Store) Fri. 12 to 8: Sat. 10 to 5; Sun. 12 to 6; Mon. 10 to 5 Meals on Wheels support is often for a short term period be- cause a person is convalescing, but it can be for longer periods. It is evident from demo- graphic projections that the need for Meals on Wheels in our community is only going to es- calate. The provincial govern- ment has recognized this fact by instituting a Long Term Care Reform to the social ser- vice system in Ontario. Volunteers and staff of Scu- gog Community Care have at- tended the forum co-sponsored by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Community and Socail Services outlining plans to utilize available resources, and assess what is needed in the future. We know that Meals on Wheels is considered an in- tegral part of this planning for in-home services. The biggest challenge to meeting the growing need in Scugog Township is to main- tain the volunteer component. It is this factor that makes Meals on Wheels special. This requires the commitment and dedication of our local citizens. This is an open invitation to the people in this community to join us in bringing warmth into a neighbour's life. "It is a satis- fying leisure-time pursuit," is the general feeling of current volunteers. Many feel they get back much more than they give. Some businesses, such as the Port Perry Royal Bank encour- age their employees to give up a lunch hour periodically to deliv- er Meals on Wheels, they in turn give the employee the ex- tra time it may require. Thisen- ables a full-time worker to be actively involved with his/her community. The company ben- efits, the employee benefits, and the community benefits. Join us!
