14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 16, 1990 Lelters io the editor KISS fan defends 'rock' music To the Editor: I am a 23 yr. old dedicated "Kiss" Fan. The heavy metal group you labelled as a "Satanic Group." I have listened to "Kiss"' music, gone to "Kiss" concerts, collected "Kiss" collectables for over fif- teen years. I even named my daughter after a "Kiss" song ti- tle. My wife enjoys them, my friends enjoy them and tomorrow (Oct. 12) my father and I are go- ing to see them at Copps Col- liseum in Hamilton. This band has performed on the Jerry Lewis Telethon, performed on the 'Hearing Aid" album (for famine relief - by many heavy metal artists) and have been a part of the "Rock Against Drugs" program for many years. Now that I have come to the defense of the band that got me through teenage years, gradua- tion of high school, graduation of college and the stress of everyday life, I would now like to correct a few of your factual errors. Heavy metal or any other type of music has never been proven to have any "uncanny parallel" bet- ween a person's aggressive behaviour or state of mind (nor does music calm the savage beast). As far as "Suicide Solution" by Ozzy Osbourne. You obviously never listened to the song. It com- pares alcohol with death (the bot- tle with the grim reaper). The on- ly message here is if you drink, you're eventually going to die. "Don't Fear The Reaper" is not a song by '"The Cult" it is a song by 'Blue Oyster Cult." We'll have to see some proof of this song en- couraging death. Maybe a gun comes hidden in the album sleeve? You ask why our teens are so in- volved with...1. Drinking - usual- ly starts within the family history? 2. Drugs - our teens parents saw Elvis Presley die of drugs and I think they called him the King? 3. Sex - watch T.V.? 4. Occult - who was Charles Manson? I don't think music has anymore to do with any of these problems today or yesterday than anything else. Problems or to- day's youth are just more ex- ploited than yesterdays. Just like all other problems they aren't developing, they've always been there. The bottom line is that music is harmless but the unstable mind is dangerous. Sitting in a traffic jam on the 401 is nerve wracking whether you listen to "Barry Manilow" or 'Iron Maiden." Adolf Hitler didn't have any "AC- DC" tunes & look what he was capable of. Boycotting music from stores would be like cutting off the world's oil. Big time crisis. Sincerely, Jeff Cox, Port Perry P.S. I've seen Black Sabbath in concert three times and sorry, no alter calls to the Devil -- just a good show. Decision must be made, dumpland or farmland To the Editor: I am disturbed by the lack of concern of Port Perry residents about the proposed dump sites in Scugog. The Star's headline "Ward IV Gears for Long Fight" indicates Cartwright is alone in opposing the dump sites, but the Town of Newcastle has voted $100,000 to fight the Clarke Twp. dumpsite proposed. The Kendal Hills have suddenly become the "Ganaraska" and the whole area is rallying around the folks direct- ly threatened by the proposal. Mayor Hubbard has soundly criticized McLaren Engineering for incompetent work and poor selection of sites. The Oshawa Times edition (Oct. 2/90) states 'the sites in North-East Oshawa and Newcas- tle seem especially absurd since they would cause a major disrup- tion in the way we in Durham en- joy our lifestyle." That narrows 5 sites down to 3 because The Times says 'at least two of the sites are on the list on- ly to make the ultimate selection seem like the result of more of a competition than it really is." 3 sites left - 2 of them in Cartwright - a divided council more anxious to accept "host community" goodies than fight against dump sites in Scugog. Elected officials with visions of long hoped for public buildings to be built by surrendering farms in Ward IV where it doesn't matter! Wait a moment! Do we want farm sights or dump sites? That easy "host community' money * for Port Perry, won't pay the cost of keeping Lake Scugog alive and the Lake, not new public buildings, is what keeps Port Perry vibrant and economically sound. Both local dump sites have their ugly black perimeter lines drawn to include source waters of major creeks feeding the south side and east end of Scugog. Leachate from #38 south of Blackstock would wind through 3 or 4 miles of swamp, an old unus- ed sawmill, dam-site to the marsh where today, many duck hunters bring commerce to the Scugog merchants. Does no one in Port Perry care? Proposed dump sites do more than just a lot of garbage. John , 985-011 i 0111 Windy APPLE ORCHARD : McClelland's interview and arti- cle of the Swains, pointed out some of the problems. These are our friends and neighbours, they belong to our local churches and create community activities. They shop in Port Perry. If we stand idly by and watch them be displac al of Scugog would feel the loss. In the short time since the announcement, k watch the stress-signs these people (land- owners) are showing. Their tense faces and weary-joyless eyes reflect the fact they are no longer independent, but now are depen- dent on someone else's decision, unnerved by a council that is weak in opposing the dump, shaken by the stupid selection of an overpaid engineering firm choosing choice farmland for Durham's dump! The young peo- ple and children of these families don't understand why their heritage might be bulldozed and their future as rural residents uprooted. The best experts are the ones that have to live by the conse- quences of their decisions. The "experts" McLaren Engineering, have already been paid half a million for a job they have not done. The Port Colborne com- munity is also affected by the same firm picking 5 sites of farmland for an area dump there. Sounds familiar! The Waste Management Committee of Durham does not have written reasons for how the sites were chosen. McLaren's have looked at maps and access roads and said these are the locations. They haven't even looked at soil types. The main soil classification in Cart- wright is bond-head, fine sandy loam which does not have a clay base. The 2 sites include source springs for creeks that feed into Lake Scugog. If they had driven around the sites that would be ob- vious to them. These "experts" will be far away making more money while we are trying to save our creeks and our Lake. "Farm Sights or Dump Sites" which do we want. Let's all support Zero Garbage.
