Sn 7 Small Business Week to raise awareness Most Canadians are unaware of the contribution that the small business sec- tor makes to the economy. Take job creation for exam- ple. Few people know that four out of ten Canadians employed in the private sec- tor work for a small business. Or that small business accounts for more than 80 percent of all net new jobs created in Canada. In the field of research and development, two thirds of all businesses performing R & D are small businesses that employ fewer than 50 people. Such striking data accor- ding to Federal Business Development Bank Vice President and Regional General Manager, Francis Roy, is often overlooked. "Many people still see large corporations as the only engines of economic growth and job creation. But this just is not so. Small com- panies and the flexibility they possess are vitally im- portant, especially in light of the current economic slowdown, the increased speed of product innovation and aggressive competition from foreign businesses." This month, the Federal Business Development Bank and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce will highlight the contribution of Canada's 900,000 small businesses by sponsoring Small Business Week 1990 from October 21 to 27. Now in its eleventh year, Small Business Week is the thrust behind hundreds of activities held throughout the province for en- trepreneurs to meet, discuss and exchange business information. In 1989 Small Business Week drew over 133,000 par- ticipants nationwide. In On- tario, some 9,000 en- trepreneurs attended over 100 events including business fairs, workshops and seminars, conferences, counselling sessions and business breakfasts. A highlight of Small Business Week 1990 will be the presentation of 12 awards to young en- trepreneurs from accross the country (one from each province and territory) at the national launch of Small Business Week October 17th in Toronto. This is the third year for the awards which recognize the hard work and igenuity of those people 29 years of age or younger who have started and made a small business a success. This year's edition of the Week will be guided by the theme "Quality and Pro- ductivity: The Competitive Edge.' The theme will pro- vide a forum for the discus- sion of practical strategies to help business attain op- timum quality and produc- tivity regardless of whether they operate in the service or manufacturing sectors. The jockeys made it look so easy and their outfits looked spiffy. | HAD to ride! | didn't go out and buy the attire one associates with horseback riding, but, rather improvised with _ jeans, striped shirt and my winter boots. | didn't consider a helmet as | wanted the feeling of the wind blowing through my hair. Little did | re- alize I'd lose half of it before my ride was over. | was not satisfied to ride "Flash." The . name sounded too common. Nor was | tempt- ed by "Lightning" -- very ordinary. Oh, the hors- es tried to impress me by flailing their front hooves in the air as a greeting. | just ignored them. In the stable | could hear a beast pawing the ground and neighing. He became a chal- lenge. | wanted HIM! Out came Thunder Thumper, nostrils flaring, eyes red. He was gorgeous. We established eye contact. We were ready. | hopped up on the right-hand side. The friendship was over. No-one had tak- en the time to tell me horses prefer the left side. Once | became comfy in the saddle | thought | would tease him with a gentle kick in the ribs. We were instantly off and running--- and---running---and running! Thunder Thumper had never heard the words "Canter, whoa, or stop, you creature, STOP!" The continuation of the ride was a bit of a blur. | do remember a cliff at one point. The trainers had obviously put cleats in his shoes because | recall round- ing a corner horizontally. At another point | was standing straight in the saddle. | would like to say | was showing off. Honesty prevents me. It was just sheer, un- adulterated fear. After experiencing the speed of sound, | yanked on the reigns. Thunder Thumper understood and slowed down -- just enough to jump two fences. Over the din of horse hooves pounding the ground, | heard a distant shout -- "cover the eyes, cover the eyes!" | thought they meant mine. Blindly, | made my way back into the saddle and the horse decided he had finished his run for the year. Whoever said horses don't have emotions is wrong.
