Find temporary solution to recycling centre problems Durham Region's blue box re- cycling program will not be in- terrupted. There was speculation that the popular program would cease operation temporarily be- cause talks between the recy- cling centre's board of directors and the region's waste manage- ment committee brought no as- surances that DRC employees would be guaranteed jobs once the region took over the plant. DRC board of directors rejected the extension stating that talks between the centre and regional officials failed to guarantee their workers jobs when the region took over the operation.) After a two-hour in-camera session on Wednesday, region- al council voted 24-4 in favor of the region taking over the pro- cessing end of the centre, while dumping the collection onto the municipalities. The region will continue to fi- nance the program and will lease the 18 recycling pick-up vehicles to the municipalities. At present it is unknown how many Durham Recycling Cen- tre employees will keep their jobs with the take over. About 40-50 processing employees may be absorbed by the region, but the 20-30 people employed in the collection end of the cen- tre may not be hired by the mu- nicipalities, officials at the cen- tre fear. The region will take over the recycling centre operations on Dec. 1 and the interim recycling action plan will be applied until Dec. 31, 1991.
