The re-count, held last week in front of Judge James Crawford gave the New Demo- crat Mills 10,962 votes, the same total he had election night back on September 6. That is a 55-vote margin over - Conservative candidate Kirk Kemp who ended with 10,907. : The re-count showed Liber- al candidate Marilyn Pearce with an official total of 7,835; followed by Tim Crookall of the Family Coalition Party with 2,487; and Harry Tunbridge of the COR Party with 1,286 votes. Promotion will save consumers GST tax A Port Perry businessman has come up with a unique idea he believes will benefit local merchants and shoppers alike, when the federal GST comes into effect January 1. The "GST Coupon Givea- way" is the idea of Lang Cope, who operates Daisy's Fabrics on Queen Street, and 60 Port Perry merchants and businesses will be participating in this pro- gram. Here's how it works Between now and Decem- ber 31, any shopper making a purchase at any of the partici- pating merchants will receive coupons valued at 10 per cent of the purchase price. (i.e., a $100 purchase will yield $10.00 in G.S.T. coupons) Starting on January 1, 1991 (the day the federal Goods and Services Tax is scheduled to kick in) and continuing through to March 31, these cou- pons can be redeemed on the GST portion of any purchase made at any of the particpating merchants. For example, if a shopper makes a $100 purchase be- tween Jan. 1 and March 31, the coupons can be used to pay the $7 GST that would be charged on that $100 purchase. At least 20 vehicles were severely damaged with win- dows smashed, some were set on fire and a construction hut in Apple Valley was torched. A police spokesman said a heavy blunt object and bricks were used to smash the vehicle windows. And in the Castle Harbour subdivision, driveway lamps in front of three homes were smashed and destroyed. It was the worst single night of vandalism in memory in this community that left Re- gional Police officers shaking their heads in dismay. Staff Sgt. Lang Cope, a local businessman has developed-an idea which should be beneficial to both the merchants and consumers called the GST Coupon Giveaway. At least 60 merchants in Port Perry agree with the concept and will participate by giving away coupons valued at 10% of all purchases between now and December 31. Consumers will then be able to redeem the coupons during the first three months of 1991 against the GST charged on any item purchased.
