"Nobody is doing it," she told the Star. "It's too frustrating, too difficult." When asked why she does it, Ms. Johanson replied, "I love it. Itis for my soul." "I am a person who has to have different work. I have to be my own person." - Ms. Johanson describes her work as a jigsaw puzzle, only the pieces aren't popped into place. Each miniature piece is sewn onto a denim canvas backed with layers of interfac- ing. One picture measuring six inches by eight inches takes about six weeks to complete, she said. Her work -- which includes a day at the circus, fantasy piec- es, Mexican scenes and time passages, among others -- ex- plodes with color in the most minute detail using the finest fabrics and Hungarian threads. Ms. Johanson researches each piece before she begins so that her work is not just a pret- ty picture, but tells a story as well. "I cannot do a piece unless I study it," she told the Star. Ms. Johanson was born in Saarlouis Saargebiet, West - Germany. At the age of 16, she moved to Canada with her fam- ily. She held many jobs, includ- ing sewing in a factory, manag- ing a shoe store and a Yorkville dress shop, before becoming a professional dressmaker. She loved patchwork, and one day, while doing a small piece on her sewing machine the idea of miniature fibre art struck her. : She began experimenting with the unique art form in the late '70's.
