I EN ERE yy Letters io the editor Big "Thanks" to Scugog residents To the Editor: As our stay in Scugog Township is coming to an end, I would like to extend a big thank you to all community members on behalf of my counterpart and all 14 par- ticipants. Your openness and generosity have given us a special sense of belonging in the com- munity; you have made us feel very welcome here. Special recognition must go to Mayor Howard Hall for suppor- ting us in so many ways, and to the staff at the Port Perry Star for their enthusiasm, support, and of course the visibility they gave to the program. Their help has been crucial to the success of Canada World Youth in Scugog. _.Special thanks also go to the in- dividuals who have shared their knowledge or expertise with the group: Joel Bagg and Sandra Campbell at OMAF, Liz Fulford, Barbara Evans of Bethesda- Reach Women's Institute, Rev. Charles Bull (for the telescopjc view), Kim Mitchell at the Nurs- ing Home, Darlene Comer at Stonemoor Daycare, Helen Mersereau at Central 7, and Jean- nette Ross at the Women's Crisis Line. We are also greatly indebted to all the groups who shared their meeting space with us: the Port Perry and Manchester United Church Communities, the Kinsmen (and Mrs. Wilson), Borelia Co-op Homes, and par- ticularily the Church of the Ascen- sion Anglican Church community who gave us a home when we first arrived here in August.' Thanks Mrs. Christie! Finally, I would like to thank the people closest to us: the host families. It is you who have done the day to day support, who have worked with the participants, and made the program happen. I'd like to thank John and Joanna Kersten, Richard and Ruby Van Camp, Cathy McKay and Marvin Stevenson, Rod and Marlene McKay, Gerald and Nancy Hill, Marion, Herman, George and Michelle Hempen, Rita and Bill McAfee, and Bill and Margaret Ann Lamb. You have shown a wonderful generosity in opening your homes and sharing your lives with the young Thai and Canadian participants. We hope that you have learned as much from us as we have from you! And thanks to Margaret and Jim for all your help and support (from Mek and I). My last message of thanks goes to Laurel Price and Mary Lynne Williamson. Thank you for everything you have done! I couldn't have asked for better support committee members. Your constant support of the pro- gram, the participants, and the group leaders has been invaluable. Canada World Youth leaves Port Perry on October 27th for a three day camp in Oshawa, and then a four day retreat with the Creemore and Woodville groups. We'll get a short break in Toron- to, and then it's off to Thailand and warm, sunny weather! We'll send news via the Port Perry Star, and the Canadians will return on February 26-28 to tell of their adventures in South-East Asia. Until then, thank you once again, and sawaaddi kha! Denise Byrnes, Group Leader and the Canada World Youth Group Bravo for speaking out To the Editor: I read the letters that both Carol Switzer and M. Johansen wrote to you in recent papers and I hear- tily shout "Bravo, Ladies!" It's time moral citizens speak out for decency in our community and country. A few months ago, I took the time to look at titles and to listen to a few pieces of secular 'music' that many of the young people are caught up in today. To my horror, I could not believe what I was reading or hearing. Yes, parents and citizens, it is hard to catch the words over the beat, but the teens have it down to a science and we must sit down and listen, at least for a few minutes. The pornographic filth, profanity, garbage and Satanic influence that is being implanted in the minds of our children must not be tolerated. As M. Johansen stated, "For our kids sake, Listen, Speak Out and if necessary Throw Out this Dark Metal Music" and Rap. We must help our teens unders- tand how they can and do become brainwashed through this music. Parents, we need to help our kids replace this music. For all of us who claim to be Christians, we need to follow the words of 2 Chronicles 7:14 - "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." Our land needs heal- ing in many areas today, folks - What are we going to do about it?? Sincerely, Mrs. L. Barron Port Perry.
