20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 30, 1990 Glass Menagerie at Town Hall The Borelians Community Theatre of Port Perry have staged another classic play to open their season of excellent drama. The Glass Menagerie, one of Tennessee Williams' most fa- mous works, wraps up perfor- mances at the Town week. The play, often pegged by critics as autobiographical of Williams' life, tells the story of one family's fragile existance. First, there is the mother, Amanda. In her mind, she was the most sought after southern belle. She reminisces (repeat- edly) to her children that on one occasion she had so many gen- tlemen callers that there wasn't enough chairs to seat them all. But in the end, she marries a telephone company employee who fell in love with long dis- tance and left the family. A larger than life portrait of the husband and father still hangs in the family's home. And then there is the daugh- ter Laura, the oldest of two chil-. all this - dren. Although she believes she is crippled (Laura walks with a limp) her only disability is not having confidence in herself. Laura is incredibly shy and withdraws herself from any so- cialinteraction. Her only passion is her collec- tion of glass figurines which she calls her glass menagerie. Although the play is entitled The Glass Menagerie, it is not symbolic of Laura's collection, but of Laura herself. Tom, Laura's brother, rounds out the family. He narrates por- tions of the play and critics be- lieve he is Williams. Although he cares sincerely about Laura's well-being, and to a lesser extent about his mother, he has his father's wanderlust in him. To get away from the family's St. Louis apartment, he "goes to the movies" until all hours at night. In his soliloquy he talks about leaving his deadend job at a shoe factory to become a merchant marine. The first part of the play sets the stage for the climax when Laura gets her first -- and prob- ably last -- gentleman caller. Because of his mother's per- sisténce, Tom invites the only friend he has at the shoe factory to their home for dinner. As it turns out, Jim, the gen- tleman caller, is a man Laura secretly cared about in high school. To reveal much more would spoil the ending. Borelian director, John H.
