28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 30, 1990 MoJacks defeat Chiefs for second victory After two straight losses, the Port Perry MoJacks bounced back Sunday night to defeat the Lakefield Chiefs 5-4 in Lakefield. It was just the second win, along with two ties for the Mo- Jacks in eight games so far this season. After a scoreless first peri- od, MoJacks jumped into a 3-1 lead over the Chiefs on goals by Brad Menzies, Bill Lawrenson and Jason Heuther. Menzies with his second of the game gave the team a 5-3 lead early in the third frame, and Jarrett Harman popped what proved to be the winner less than a minute later. Chiefs came back with three goals in the third period to make the game close, but Mo- Jacks held on for the victory. John Lally helped the cause with two assists and Dwayne Mackie faced 30 shots in the MoJack cage. Halloween came a few days early for the MoJacks as the team hosted the first place Bow- manville Eagles last Saturday night at the Scugog Arena. The Eagles were in "devil- ish" fine form for the first 20 minutes, and the MoJacks looked like they were haunted by some kind of evil spirit as the visitors rolled to an 8-11ead. MoJack goalies Dwayne Mackie and Marc Blackborn shared the duties in the disas- trous first period and both have had better outings. In fact, Eagles had 15 shots on goal and scored on eight of them. Coach Ken Harman must have done something to the team after the first period to "exorcise the evil spirits" be- cause the MoJacks hit the ice for the middle frame looking like a completely different hock- ey club. They shut the visitors down completely and fired in four goals of their own to make the score 8-5 after 40 minutes of play. They cut the lead to 8-6 ear- ly in the third and looked like they were going to pull off one of the most amazing comebacks ever seen at the Scugog Arena. But the Eagles made it 9-6 on a power play before the Mo- Jacks re-grouped and added two more to cut the margin to 9- 8 with a minute to play 'n the game. With the goalie out for an extra attacker, MoJacks buzzed the Eagle cage and appeared to have the tying marker with five seconds left. But somehow, the puck failed to cross the line and the Eagles "escaped" with the 9-8 victory in one of the wierdest Junior C game ever at the Scu- g pond. Phil McBride fired a hat trick for the MoJacks and added an assist. Al Avery found the scoring touch with a pair of nifty goals and singles came from John Harman, Dan Maw, and John Lally. Harman and Lally each had two assists. Shane Arm- strong was the top gun for the Eagles that night with a hat trick. Incredible as it may seem after the first period "horror show," the MoJacks went on to out-shoot Bowmanville 43 to 38 in this game. 'Last Monday night in Co- bourg, the MoJ wh again had a wide margin in shots on goal (39-23) but came home empty- handed as the Cougars nipped them 4-3. MoJack goals came from Jason Heuther, Bill Lawrenson and Kevin Gibson. Kevin Williams scored twice, including the winner for £ the Cougars. SLAPSHOTS: MoJacks are idle until this coming Sunday evening (Nov. 4) when the Ux- bridge Bruins visit the Scugog Arena for a 7:30 faceoff. This should be a good game as the ri- valry between the two teams is intense. Somebody entered the Mo- Jack dressing room during the first period Saturday night and scooped nine wallets with some $240 cash, drivers licences, credit cards and other personal papers. Regional Police are investi- gating. Though the MoJacks are off the fairly slow start this year (two wins, two ties and four losses) the team can blame pure bad luck (and some erratic shooting) more than anything else. MoJacks have been pepper- ing the opposition goalies with rubber, but can't get the puck in the net. And on nights when the puck is finding the mesh, the team is surrendering a lot of goals (like Saturday's 9-8 defeat to the Eagles) But opposing teams are vary wary of the MoJacks and know full well that it's just a matter of time before the tide turns and those pucks start go- ingin. Foward Jim Vernon played a dandy game Saturday night against the Eagles. He used his size to dish out several bruising hits that sent Eagles sprawling. The hits were ot and clean. In the last three games, Vernon didn't take a single pen- alty, yet he was a physical pres- ence every time he stepped on the ice. Steve Connors was at Sat- urday's game, watching from the sidelines. Steve's one of the most skilled players in this town and it would be nice to see him re-join the club. Midgets defeat Germany in lop sided match The Port Perry Precision Con- struction Midgets experienced a little taste of international hockey when they played host to a team from Hamburg, Germany on Monday, October 17. The night began with both teams having dinner together at the Port Perry United Church Banquet Hall. The dinner was great and the players talked to one another, both experiencing a different culture. Many thanks to the ladies who were involved in preparation and working that ' night. Well, the politics were over and | each team was ready to take to the ice. After the traditional gift exchange and ceremonial face-off ~ with Mayor Howard Hall, play got underway. This game was a little lop sid- ed towards the Port Perry squad (coached by Doug Scott & Dave Bave Bourgeois), for they con- trolled the puck the majority of the night. The passing was quick & precise, the skating fast & there were very little hits. Port Perry got on the board first when Steve Laird tucked the disc in the cage with assists going to Steve Staniland and Jason Cochrane. Port went on to score 3 more goals in the first period to go into the se- cond with a lead of 4-0. Scoring for Port were: Jeff Parry (2) and Duane Empringham. Assists went to Steve Laird (2), Jason Cochrane (2), Jan Heyes and Dan Sluggett. Port Perry dominated the period, controlling the play the whole time, and gave little chance for Germany to score. In the second period, Port Perry again went on a scoring spree. Five goals were scored by Port and chalking up these marks were Steve Laird, Jody Logan (2), John Ennis & Jeff Parry. Assists were made by: Jason Cochrane (2), Steve Staniland, Jan Heyes, Jeff Brett, Jody .Logan, Steve Laird and John Ennis. Germany finally got on the board when Hannu Ohlhaber put one between the pipes. The assist went to cap- tain Esa Alto. Hamburg again tried to put a score on Port Perry when Esa Alto scored an unassisted goal with 1 minute to go. The final score, Port Perry 9, Hamburg 2. Port Perry goalies AO Scugog Mayor Howard Hall and OMHA rep Sharon Griffen took part in the puck- dropping ceremony October 22 as a team from Germany played the Port Perry Midgets. At left Is Hamburg captain Esa Alto and Port captain Steve Laird. The game was slightly one- sided In favour of the Port squad. (see story for details) Ray Doyle and Matt Willets played very well, splitting the ac- tion. The net area was not busy but they did have to make key saves at certain points in the game. Well done! Port Perry dominated and showed some class throughout. Germany learned a lot about Canadian hockey and the ex- perience for them was probably very worth while. The star of the game went to Steve Laird from the Port Perry squad. Steve played extremely well, setting up plays, checking closely and not to mention the 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points he chalked up. Steve, showed what he can do and one hopes he can continue his success. An interesting note from across the pond in Europe is that hockey in Hamburg Germany is quite dif- ferent than here in Port Perry. Hamburg consists of 1.6 million people but the Midget (13-15) hockey team plays on an open air ice rink. Pretty chilly! Port Perry Presicion Construc- tion thanks all who were involv- ed in this exhibition match and also to the fans who came out to support the team. Port Perry plays every Monday night at 9:15 and watch the Star for details on how the team is doing. Juveniles decrease perfect record The Key-Bar Juveniles decreased their perfect record to 3-1-0 this Saturday night in a penalty ridden loss in Sunderland. Scoring for Port in the 5-3 game were Scott Porter (2) and Jamie Menzies (1). Assists were picked up by Paul Kett (2), Porter (1) and Eric Grosvenor (1). Revenge will be sweet as Sunderland visits Port this Thurs- day evening at 9:00. Come out and support your local athletes.
