This group of Scugog fellows was headed for Boston late Saturday night to pay a debt to the famous Cheers Sports Bar on Beacon Street. Way back when as the Blue Jays and the Red Sox were battling for the baseball pennant, Emiel's Restaurant in Port Perry placed a bet with Cheers that Toronto would win it all. Well, we all know what happened to the Blue Jays, so the guys had a plaque made up to present to Cheers from Emiels. But rather than just mail the plaque, they decided to deliver it in person. From left are Doug Smith, Rick Weden, Jerry Cochrane (who came up with the Idea) Robert Kroonenberg and Richard Young, just as they boarded the motor home for the journey to Cheers in Boston. The coaching staff is impress- ed with the skill, effort and team spirit that has been displayed. Goaltending has been one of the strong factors in the early suc- cesses, with Noel Lovering primarily responsible for wat- ching the net. Rob Ashton has been called upon often to help the team and has done well. Strong defense is also a key fac- tor and this year's defensemen are showing they can stick to the game plan fairly consistently. Nathan Brown, Daryl Vander Slagt, Noah St. Amond, Chris MacLeod and Craig Leask share these duties. On the forward line are the guys responsible for most of the goals - David Volman, Stuart Dyer, Brad Moase, Todd Taylor, Scott Menzies, Jason McBride, Scott Airey, Darrell Vanderligt and Ryan Pickard. Ross Stainton has been called up quite often to fill in when needed. The team from Haliburton came to play the Port Perry crew October 24. The two teams were fairly evenly matched for the ma- jority of the game but the visitors capitalized on any opportunities left open to them. The 4 goal lead they were able to secure was the result of momentary lapses by Port Perry to clear the puck effectively from their own end. Offensively the team managed to score 3 goals but not enough to take the victory. In the 1st period, Stuart Dyer tallied 1 goal unassisted. Daryl Vander Slagt scored 1 assisted by Darrell Vanderligt. The opposition got 3 quick goals and then Darrell Vanderligt got a second goal unassisted. 2 more goals put Haliburton out in front. Final score 7-3. This match could have easily gone the other way - and the team is looking forward to a rematch later in the season. OSHAWA ed to Woodville for a league match. The first period was a see- saw battle with Woodville manag- ing, finally, to get one past the goalie. That was the best they could do though and Port Perry stormed back to notch 3 goals to win the game. This was a clean, hard hitting game and the referees called several penalties. All 3 Canadian Tire goals were short handed. In the 2nd period Craig Leask opened the scoring by firing one in from the blue line assisted by Stuart Dyer who won the face off draw. Following that, less than a minute later, Craig Leask pressured the opposition to free up the puck putting it out to Stuart who poked it in. The 3rd goal was scored by Todd Taylor who took a nice pass from Scott Airey, made a good rush to beat the 2 defensemen and broke in alone on the goalie firing a hard shot into the top left hand corner. Noel Lovering made some fantastic stops in the first 2 periods. For the Woodville game Mike Tripp was called up to back Noel and he shut the opposition down completely for the 3rd period. Anybody watching his quick moves and skillful saves could doubt the decision to bring him up for this game. Final score 3-1. : The fans travelling to Woodville came out on a miserable night but were treated to a super hockey game. Thanks for the support. The first tournament for the Canadian Tire Midgets is comin up in Oakwobd. The first gam will be at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, November 2 in Oakwood Arena.
