Epsom students enjoy workshop on Highland dancing recently Congratulations to the members of Epsom's Cross Coun- try team who competed at the Durham Region Cross Country Finals on October 23 at Dagmar. We were very proud of the outstanding performance of each of our athletes. Our 8 year old girls' team plac- ed third and our 8 year old boys' and 9 year old girls' teams each finished 5th. Placing in the top ten in Durham for their age groups were Lindsey Doble, Sarah Beirness and Brad Hawker. Team members who competed at the Durham finals were Lindsey Doble, Dayna Ballagh, Paige Florence, Shauna Simmonds, Teena Evans, Ashley Slack, Katie Beirness, Graig Evans, Ross Gower, John Barton, Jeff Vanuden, Scott Risebrough, Shawn Noble, Scott Evans, Brett Combdon, Sarah Beirness, Leah Cleeton, Lindsay Gower, Saman- tha Diotte, Andrea Sutherland, Jill Stroud, Tanya Schaal, Tanya Wilson and Brad Hawker. On October 19th the grade 3 / 4 class visited the Nonquon. Their day consisted of a bird study and orienteering. A great day was had by all. On October 4th the Epsom pupils enjoyed a workshop by Highland Dance Instructor Sherry Dalliday. Sherry showed a video of the recent Canadian Championships and demonstrated several dances. Epsom School News - Representatives from Canada World Youth visited Epsom P.S. on October 24. The children learn- ed many new things about Thailand and their culture. "A special visit by the Port Perry Library Dragon was en- joyed by the pupils at Epsom. Congratulations to Cheri Jarvis who was a runner-up in the Name- the-Dragon contest. The floor hockey season is now half over. The Ultimate Warriors and the Fireballs are battling for the top spot in the standings. All six teams are playing well together and the play-offs are go- ing to be really exciting. All children in grades 1-6 travelled to Eastdale Collegiate on October 10th to see a live per- formance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Recently the students from Ep- som travelled to the Port Perry Library to view the works of master spinner and weaver Wen- dy Bateman. Wendy's talk on en- vironmental issues was very in- formative and challenging. The Epsom/Greenbank School Advisory Committee will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, November 27th at 1:30 p.m. at Greenbank P.S.. Donovan Frazer, Multicultural Consultant with the Durham Board of Education will be the guest speaker. Any person in the community is welcome to attend. Babysitting is provided. Epsom P.S. needs a noon-hour supervisor beginning January 7, 1991. Any person interested in this postion may phone Epsom P.S. (985-7250) for more information. November 4 was the Epsom- Utica Church Anniversary. All en- joyed the message by guest speaker Rev. Newton Reed of Ux- bridge and were pleased to welcome our new minister Rev. Jim Bewell with a cake and cof- fee Clatch after the service. We were so pleased the Rev. Reed was accompanied by his wife. The choir rendered two numbers. Play it again! We never get tired of, "I'll Fly Away." Now Hallowe'en is over and the beautiful and varied costumes stored till next year. The message is, Time is Short so start to get your float ready for the ever popular Santa Claus Parade on November 24. Next Sunday, November 11 Goodwood will celebrate their an- niversary. Their guest speaker will be Rev. Edith Anne Schantz of Toronto who was our beloved minister for several years. There will be a pot luck supper at 5:30 p-m. with the church service at p.m.. All welcome. : v Epsom-Utica U.C.W. catered for the Port Perry Yacht Club din- ner on Saturday. An old fashion- ed roast beef dinner with gravy and all the fixings with home- made pie for dessert - now complaints! The busy Epsom-Utica U.C.W. will be at Uxbridge Health Care Centre for a birthday party on November 13 at 7 p.m.. An en- joyable programme is being prepared. The residents are get- ting ready for Santa Claus, their Bazaar and 1 hope Christmas Pudding. November 17. In town and out of town we are all preparing for Community Care and Craft Bazaar. Bigger and Better. It is your community, so may I say donations for the Bake table or the fish pond will be welcomed. This takes place at the Ux- bridge Community Centre. The Hospital Bazaar was a wonderful success last Saturday. The 4H Banquet and Awards night was held in Uxbridge Com- munity Centre Saturday evening, Nov. 3. Our former Dairy Princess Wendy Evans is to be congratulated as winner of the dairy championship. Wendy is now attending University at Peterborough. Alan and Norine Card attended a family dinner at the home of Cathy and Jack Monsma in Port Perry. This surprise party was in honour of their wedding anniver- sary. Congratulations from all of us. Mrs. Lloyd Lee of Toronto visited her sister Ruth and her husband Elmer Wilson on Satur- day afternooun. Friday evening was graduation in Port Perry High School. Doug and Beth Wilson attended as Beth's sister Wendy was one of the graduating class. Following the graduation, Beth and Doug and the rest of the Evans family gathered at the home of Wendy's parents Mr. and Mrs. Ross Evans for a congratulation party. Ep- som friends also send all best wishes to Wendy. Don and Stella Asling, Keith and Faye Ashton attended a wood carving show in Blackstock Hall on Sunday afternoon. Before returning home they called on Julia and Clay Dempsey at their new home in Port Perry. The singin' and dancin' extravaganza is good clean fun for the whole posse. If you can't get a balcony seat, be sure to bring your booster, 'cause the corn is as high as an elephant's eye. Nev- er fear, the singin' will float you right up to the sky. You'll howl at the comic an- tics of the Persian peddler Ali Hakim (played by Rob Corbett as he learns the hard way, there's nary a girl he can flirt with who doesn't have a pa with a shotgun. And you'll snicker at the snubs the lovely Laurey (Barbara Taylor-Bone) flings at the lovesick Curly (Walter Bone). Nasty Jud Fry (Hugh Baird), the guy you love to hate, will steal your heart with his mel- ancholy solo. The lively Aunt Eller (Michele Jones will make your head snap to attention as she rules the roost at the farm and steers us all toward a hap- py ending, riding off in a surrey with the fringe on top. Due to unforseen circum- stances, Brian Smart was un- able to complete the direction of the show. Fortunately, Nina Foxall, who has directed many Scugog Choral Society shows, was able to lend her time and APPLES for SALE talents to carry the society through to the finish with flour- ish. Show dates are arriving soon and tickets are moving fast. Be sure you don't miss this great family entertainment. Nine evening performances are scheduled for November 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, and Dec. 1. Curtain time is 8 p.m. at the Town Hall.
