26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 6, 1990 Scugog Christian School events With October 25 and 26 being the OCSTA Convention, last week was a short one for the students. The teachers indicated the con- vention was an inspiring and stimulating experience and say they are ready to pick up their work with a renewed energy again! Kindergarten - Mrs. vanEyk: News Flash! The kindergarten children read their first story this past week! It was about a family and their dog, Toby. We have completed the nursery rhyme unit, ending with a Mother Goose party. We are now doing a short unit on Fall, talking about the changes we see in the trees, the leaves and the weather, and also about ways in which birds and animals prepare for winter. We'll do some special art activities, play some fall games and goon a special nature walk. Grades One and Two - Mrs. Lib- by: The class in continuing with the life of Joseph in Bible this week, and is learning the song "In His Time." If you know this song, please sing it along with your children. We are learning colors in French, and will be having a test November 13. We are very happy to have Mrs. Stevens with us Tuesday and Thursday after- noons to help with our reading. Thanks to much! Grades Three and Four - Miss Kolkman: Last week, our theme in devotions was "'kindness" and Robert and Jennifer did a great job with their skit showing what kindness means. This week we talked about "gentleness," next week we will study "goodness." Last Wednesday we again made some tray favours for the hospital. We painted egg carton cups black and put them on a pumpkin base and filled them with candy. The candies were delicious (there were also some left over for us to eat)! In music, we have enjoyed sing- ing "All God's Critters Got a Place in the Choir," and echoing rhythmic patterns that were clap- ped by some leaders. This Friday we will have a quiz on the second verse of He Leadeth Me. For our read-a-thon the third graders need to read 50 pages aad fourth graders need to read 75 pages to receive credit for one book. They need to bring in every book that they have read so they can record some facts about their books and so I can evaluate what each book is worth. Our class goal will be to raise $500.00. Grades Five and Six - Mrs. Ashenhurst: The class did a lot of work in their poetry books this week and wrote their own Psalm of Praise. It was great to realize just how much we have to praise God for. All students should be practising their timestables at home each day. Grades Seven and Eight- Mrs. Guetter: Our classroom has been invaded by tents in the midst of dart green trees, fishermen throwing lines into northern lakes, glowing campfires, and some wild animals like the chip- munk and the moose. The students did a beautiful job on the - campsite models that they made as part of their unit on the con- iferous forest. Please stop by and take a look at them! In social studies we are wrapp- ing up our study of New France up to the 1700's. Our test will be on Wednesday and it well require some serious study. On Tuesday students have music assignment due and Wednesday their geography question sheet is due. by: : 4 fd 7 *%, $25,000 commitment to the hospital to be p (front, from left) poppy chairman Robert Douglas, Legion Branch 419 members presented a cheque f or $5,000 to Community Memorial Hospital foundation chairman Howard Hall recently. MOBILE SERVICE GUARANTEED WORKMANSHIP This photo, snapped by Al Brown of Caesarea shows a calf moose that was seen by several people swimming in Lake Scugog last Friday morning. Al was duck hunting with friends when they spotted the calf and took the boat out for a better look. A cow moose, believed to be the mother was also seen swimming in the lake the same morning. The pair had been spotted entering the lake at Washburn Island. The calf went onto shore on the east side of Scugog Island, and it's not known if it re-united with the mother.
