Lung association seminar on smoking at Port high school Port Perry High School and the Durham on Lung Asso- ciation are working together to help students butt out. About 50 students signed up for a stop smoking seminar at the high school, presented by thel association. PPHS vice principal Sandra Riches told the Port Perry Star that the seminar stressed modi- fication techniques as opposed to scare tactics. She said she has seen some optimistic results from the pro- am, noting that several stu- ents have given up the habit, while others have cut back on their cigarette intake. Still, some students continue to smoke at the same rate. Young female students con- tinue to make up a large per- centage of the smokers at the high school, Ms. Riches said. Although stores are not per- mitted to sell cigarettes to per- sons under the age of 18, most of the student population is un- der that age. "We have students in the school that are well under that age and already have a pack- and-a-half a day habit," Ms. Riches said. "It's an expensive habit to es- tablish at a young age," she con- tinued. Ms. Riches estimated that a very small percentage of teach- ers at PPHS smoke. Smoking is not allowed any- where on school property. on 8X O off and potpourri ® Books and picture frames °o Decoys and executive gifts Personal Service \J \ LIN > LSS - ox I, S NS | SZ AT) SBIR 2; AZ IN y= \ \& \ { An Invitation 7 () Christmas Open House ¥: Vl our extensive gift selection ® Tree decorations, Christmas wrap, cards, candles ® Pottery, glass, china and crystal! ® Dolls, music boxes and keepsakes p ® Gund animals and Children's Gift Room 4 = ® Gourmet gift baskets, made-to-order Complimentary Gift Wrap A WA The Velvet Bear 129 King Street East, Bowmanville /q Telephone 623-8100 Sunday, November 18th, 1990 ~~ A from: 12 Noon until 4:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served while you shop or browse at your leisure.
