18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 20, 1990 Canadian submarine Okanagan visits Oshawa Harbour on tour Hundreds of people stood in line Saturday afternoon at the Oshawa Harbour for the chance to get a close look at the Okanagan, all 296 feet of her. The Canadian submarine and crew of 66 had made previ- ous stops in Hamilton and To- ronto as part of a good-will voy- age to Lake Ontario. And it's believed this was the first time a Canadian sub- marine journeyed so farinland. As might be expected, space inside the ship is at a pre- mium. In fact, every square inch of space is utilized. And during even a quick tour, visitors are startled at just how cramped things are inside this Oberon class submarine. In fact, just getting from the outer deck to below involves Ek -- ig £7) crawling backwards through a narrow hatch and down an equally narrow ladder. Inside, the Okanagan is a maze of pipes and wires, guag- es, control panels, and flashing lights. The walkway is narrow and low, and the bunks, curtained off, line each side of the walk- way. The power comes from two electric motors (3000 HP), and the electricity is generated by two diesel motors. The power is stored in a 224 cell battery. There are six torpedo tubes, armed with long-range high speed torpedos with spares stored nearby. The Okanagan is capable of cruising for long periods under This control panel Is for the ship's electric engines. - NOW REGISTERING - 4 WEEK COURSE Begins NOVEMBER 26th Mon. & Wed. 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM - TWO INSTRUCTORS - Learn to Drive... and Surviv water, and bursts of high sub- surface speeds. The streamline external casing, painted jet-black, allows the ship to travel silently to avoid detection. Despite the cramped space inside, a lot of effort goes into assuring all possible comforts for the officers and men. Following her visit to Oshawa, the Okanagan contin- ued down Lake Ontario to King- ston and will stop-over in Mon- treal before returning to home base in Halifax. The Okanagan has two sis- ter ships, the Ojibwa and the Onondaga. All three are on active duty with the Canadian Navy in the defense of the country.
