Jolly old Santa visits Port Perry Saturday He's on his way to Port Perry. Santa Claus will be making his first "official" appearance this Saturday (Nov. 24) with the annual Chamber of Commerce Santa Claus Parade. The parade will get under- way at 2:00 PM at the Fair- grounds, make its way to Lilla treet, then to Queen Street where it will wind up on Water Street. That jolly old elf with the snow white whiskers and the bright red suit will be sure to delight the children. And once the parade is over, Santa will be at his "house" on Queen Street to greet the youngsters, listen to their Christmas "wishes" and give out small bags of treats. As for the parade itself, there will be eight marching bands and more than 35 floats. Wendy Davis, who is co- 'ordinating the parade this year, said non-commercial floats can still be entered right up to pa- rade day. For more info on entering a float, give her a call at 986-9948 (days) Along with the floats and the bands, the parade will in- clude lots of clowns to help get people in the mood for Christ- mas. And a reminder to motor- ists, parade organizers would like to have all parked cars off Queen Street starting at 12:00 Noon to help insure that all the spectators have a great view of the parade. What better chance to start getting in the Christmas spirit than the Santa Claus Parade this Saturday afternoon in Port Perry. Council is in the process of cutting back on its sidewalk snow clearing program in an ef- fort to reduce costs. Although the by-law will not come in front of council until the next meeting, members agreed Monday afternoon that snow clearing on sidewalks by municipal forces will continue mainly on collector routes that lead to schools, and a few desig- nated sidewalks. Areas that will no longer get municipal snow removal in- clude side streets in Port Perry, and new subdivisions such as Perry Glen, Apple Valley and Victorian Village. It is not known at this time how much the Township may save by reducing the number of sidewalks that get snow remov- al. Snow removal by the Town- ship will continue on collector route sidewalks such as Lilla St., Queen St., Simcoe St., Wa- ter St., and Highway 7A, and on Durham Road 57 in Caesarea, and the main roads in Black- stock, Prince Albert and Green- bank that lead to the schools in those communities. If the new by-law is ap- proved, maps showing exactly which sidewalks get snow re- moval will be published. As for the related issue of making snow removal manda- tory for residents for the stretch of sidewalk in front of their properties, council will have to decide whether some will be ex- empt for reasons of health or age. The Township assumed sidewalk snow removal in cer- tain designated areas in 1986. Seven deer hit by cars Durham Region Police say motorists in this area should be extra cautious when driving near dusk or dawn after seven deer were struck in the last ten days. And one of the vehicles that struck a deer was a Regional Po- lice cruiser driven by Const. Pe- ter Ytsma. This accident took place on Durham Road 8, west of Port Perry. Const. Ytsma was not hurt, but the cruiser sustained $3,000 damage and the deer was killed. There were two others re- ports of deer being struck on Re- gional Road 8, one on Highway 47, one on Highway 7 near Ma- nilla, and one on the Shirley Road. All of the incidents took place in either early morning or at dusk. None of the drivers was in- jured, but damage to the vehi- cles was extensive.
