Bank designs new $100 bill The next time you go to the bank and ask for a crisp, new $100 bill, you may be among the first to receive one of the new $100 bills that went into circulation on December 3. The new $100 bill -- the fifth in a series being issued by the Bank of Canada -- has been given quite a facelift -- with a completely new look. On the face, the new bill features a portrait of Sir Robert Borden, Canada's eighth Prime Minister, and on the back, an il- lustration of the Canada goose. The new bills will gradually replace $100 notes of previous series as they become worn and are withdrawn from circulation. All $100 bills, however, can be us- ed to make payments. The new bill also incorporates features to assist visually im- paired persons to identify the various denominations, and bar codes that facilitate high-speed mechanized sorting of large volumes of notes. The newly designed $100 bill is the second to be introduced by the Bank of Canada bearing an Op- tical Security Device -- a unique security feature developed by the Bank of Canada, the National The GREAT DIVIDE | Research Council of Canada and a number of private sector companies. The Optical Security Device or OSD is a small square of ultrathin reflective film which appears on the face of every $100 bill of the new series. It was first used in 1989 with the introduction of the newly designed $50 bill. The OSD changes from gold to green when tilted under light and confirms at a glance that the note is genuine. The Bank of Canada is respon- sible for enhancing the security of the nation's currency to deter counterfeiting. Counterfeiting is not a problem in Canada and the security features of the new note will help make sure that it will not be in the future. The graphic features incor- porated in newly designed notes since 1986 and the Optical Securi- ty Device in the new $50 and $100 bills will provide Canadians with excellent protection for their bank notes. A $100 bill has an average life expectancy of about seven years. There are more than 71 million $100 bills in circulation, with a face value of some $7.1 billion. Police recover hood ornaments If you've had a hood orna- ment swiped from your vehicle in the last few weeks, you might want to check with Durham Po- lice to getit back. Police have more than 30 of the decorative ornaments after charging two 14 year old Ux- bridge youthful offenders with theft over the weekend. A spokesman said the thefts mainly took place from vehicles in the parking lot of the Uxbridge Arena during Junior C hockey games. The hood ornaments seized by police are from numerous dif- ferent makes and models of cars and trucks. Give the Durham Police 26 Division a call at 570-1520. Hydro reports 12% drop in power usage last month Ontario used almost 12 per cent less electricity this October than it did in the same month last year. Ontario Hydro reports that it supplied 9.99 million mega- watt-hours of power in October, a drop of about 12 per cent from the previous October. And the reason? Hydro says it's the recession that has hit the province. If that's the case, the de- mand for electrical power will drop even more in the first few months of 1991 as the economic recession deepens. THIS WEEK YOU ASKED THE GST CONSUMER INFORMATION OFFICE. Q: I'm thinking of buying a new car in 1991. How will the proposed GST affect prices? A: The outgoing Federal Sales Tax (FST) is now part of the price of new cars. So, while they will be fully taxed at 7% in 1991, the expected effect of replacing the FST with the GST on the average $22,000 mid-size car is a reduction of around $850. QQ: My son has figured out it will cost $500 in lumber to build a dock at our cottage if he bought it now. How much will that lumber cost with the proposed GST? A: You can expect to pay about $512 for that same amount of lumber for personal use based solely on the changeover from the FST to the GST. Q: I know the proposed GST won't apply to city bus fares but I take the commuter train to work. Will I have to pay GST? A: No. Daily commuter trains are considered a municipal transit service, so fares are exempt from GST. We're here to answer your questions about how the GST will affect prices. Call us toll-free Monday to Friday 9am-9pm. Ask for your free copy of the "Consumer's Guide to the GST and Prices?' The answer is to call your GST Consumer Information Office. 1-800-668-2122 Hearing Impaired 1-800-465-7735 Ld | Gouvernement du Canada Canad? Government of Canada
