Tweens capture the gold Over the weekend the Allens Siding Products Tween 'A' team played in a tournament hosted by the St. Catharines Ringette Association, and they came home with the gold medals. Upon arrival at the Parkway Inn it was apparent to our nurse and manager Nancy Coyne that we didn't have a lot of healthy girls. Complaints of sore throats, upset stomachs, headaches and hacking coughs had the parents, coach Dan Lally and his assistant Rick Webb a bit apprehensive about the impending results of the tournament but Nancy came through as she administered her miraculous potions to all the ail- ing players. On to the ice they went and once out in the fresh cool air the girls perked up. Amy scored the first goal of the game with an assist by Vicki. A few minutes later Niagara Falls tied it up but not for long. Amanda netted a beauty, assisted by Lisa, then Amy gave us an unassisted goal, thus mak- ing the score in our favour, 3-1. In- to the second half they went when the opposition scored again but we came back again with a goal by Linda, assisted by Brandy. Again the opponents struck but Lisa retaliated with a goal with help from Brandy. Niagara Falls then were lucky with five goals. With less than two minutes left in the game Amanda scored, assisted by Deanna and Lisa. These Allen Tweens played ex- tremely well but a win just wasn't meant to be. The score ended Niagara Falls 7, Port Perry 6. Back we went to the Haig arena for game two against the St. Catharines team. Within three minutes Amy started us off on a roll with a goal, assisted by Brandy and Kyla. A minute later Amanda made her debut, assisted by Leea and Dean- na. Fifteen seconds later St. Catharines scored but we retaliated with an unassisted goal by Brandy, followed by another point from St. Catharines. Aman- da then scored, assisted by Leea and then Amy gave us two more, assisted by Linda and Leea. At the end of the first half it was Port Perry 6, St. Catharines 2. On into the second half the Port team went, as strong as ever. Two goals netted by Deanna with assists by Lisa and Amanda gave them the confidence they needed, the St. Catharines scored twice but our Tweens still hung on. Amanda netted another one, assisted by Leea, followed by our final goal by Linda, assisted by Brandy. The final outcome of their second game was Port Perry 10, St. Catharines 6. Coach Dan stressed to the girls the importance of winning our next game vs. Hamilion. Our Tweens had suffered one loss, en- joyed a win and if they won the upcoming game then they would certainly be in contention for a gold medal the next day. Back to Haig arena everyone went {this was our second home by now). Within the first minute of play Hamilton scored, two minutes later another one was netted but Amanda decided it was time to turn the tables as she gave the team a goal assisted by Bran- dy and Deanna. But Hamilton wasn't to be outdone - they scored again but so did our team, twice in fact - Leea with the aid of Dean- na again and Linda with an assist by Brancy. Now it was 3-3 and Hamilton scored again in the last few seconds of the first half. Coaches Dan .and Rick deliberated with the girls before they switched ends for the second half. The pressure was put on by our girls in this period. Again the fans excitement grew as they urg- ed the team on. Ten seconds into the second period and Leea scored to tie the game 4-4. Assists were from Amanda and Vicki. From there on it was downhill for Hamilton as our girls scored five more. Credit is given to Amanda with Linda and Brandy; Amy with Linda; Deanna with Aman- da and Leea; Amanda again with Deanna and Leea with Deanna. Sarah Coyne was simply awesome in net, stopping shot after shot on goal. Lisa, Heather, Vicki and Kyla all displayed ex- cellent defence skills. Now the girls knew they were in contention for a gold medal at their Sunday morning game. Next, the Allen girls and parents went to the Burgoyne arena for a competition in the an- nual Shoot Out and Winning goal Tender award. Everyone in the arena knew where the Port Perry fans were when Amy Parliament won the trophy for the Shoot Out. Congratulations Amy, we knew you could do it! Back to Haig arena as we fac- ed our foes from yesterday. Bang! Niagara Falls scored within the first two minutes but our girls weren't worried - they knew they could pull off a win and that's exactly what they did. Brandy scored one minute later, assisted by Amy, followed by a goal from Deanna another minute later with help from Vicki, then Amy scored three more goals with assistance from Linda, Heather and Brandy. At the end of the first period the score was Port Perry 5, Niagara Falls 3. The Niagara fans were hot on the referee's calls, yelling that the calls were most unfair, however the Allen girls kept the penalty bench warmer than the Niagara tweens! Sarah Coyne certainly had her hands full keeping Niagara Falls at bay and did a splendid job. Into the second half the girls went with our star player Amy netting another goal, assisted by Linda. With less than four minutes left in the game the coaches of both teams called a "time out' and had a hasty conference with their players. The crunch was on - Niagara Falls scored again with less than wnree minutes left and again with 38 seconds left. The score was not Port Perry 6, Niagara Falls 5. One more "'time out" was allowed. The girls couldn't let their guard down and they didn't - and they won the gold medal. Contributing to the gold victory of the Allens Siding Products Tweens were our blue sticks - Lin- da Payne, Brandy Harris, Dean- na Dempsey and Leea Kinnunen. Red sticks were Lisa Doda, Heather Lally, Vicki Stainton and -- Youth Bowling GIRLS High Average: Pee Wee - Michelle Poirier 93, Bantam - Jen- nifer Hammond 137, Junior - Melissa Dawson 149, Senior Lyndsay Dutkewich 139.
