Mr. Herrema, who under- went surgery to correct a deteri- orated bone condition in his upper left leg on Oct. 23, has re- turned to work on a parttime basis. At a meeting of regional council on Wednesday, the chairman thanked everyone who sent cards, flowers and vis- ited him while he was recuper- ating. "I missed you all," he told council, and then in true com- ical form, he added, "even the press." Mr. Herrema said his ordeal has shown him that people are Snow removal services from sidewalks cut in some areas Scugog Township will be cutting back this winter on the number of sidewalks that get municipal snow removal. Snow removal will be limit- ed to major routes that lead to schools, and the commercial ar- eas of Port Perry. Areas that will no longer get the service are side streets and streets in new subdivisions. The cut-backs are partly to save money and partly because the Township does not have the staff. And council decided on Monday that residents will be asked to clear the snow from sidewalks in front of their homes in the areas that do not get the municipal service. There will be no exemp- tions for seniors or those not able to shovel snow for medical reasons. Beware of phony fund-raiser The Scugog Fire Depart- ment has issued a warning to Township residents to be wary of phone calls asking for money. The Fire Department is not placing calls asking for funds for any charity, said a spokes- person. The Department had at least two complaints last week PLEASE RECYCLE from residents who said they got phone calls from a male who identified himself only as "a firefighter." The caller then asked for money for Muscular Dystrophy, the Heart and Stroke Fund, and "for the needy." "None of our members is placing these calls," said the De- partment spokesperson. Mills asked to explain GO decision From Page 1 service to Toronto met with fail- ure. The resolution passed by council on Monday will be for- warded to other municipal councils in the areas affected by the provincial announcement, seeking their support as well. Meanwhile, Paul Pagnue- lo, president of the Toronto/ Peterborough Passenger Assoc. says a public meeting has been called for December 12 in the Ashburn Community Hall. He has invited Durham East MPP Gord Mills to the meeting to explain the reason why the government opted for bus links rather than a GO Train. And Mr. Pagnuelo said the Association may ask commut- ers to purposely boycott the pro- posed bus link when it starts this coming February. The meeting on December 12is open to the public, he said.
