10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 11, 1990 Remember When? (From page 7) of Don Carnegie's Men's Wear. Cleve Kight rescued it, the best preserved of several pieces found at the same level. He present- ed it to Bill Brock as a relic to be displayed at Scugog Shores Museum in the future. A large tract of land, the property of Branch 419, R.C. Le- gion, will become a park and playground. The Legion offered the property to the village for the sum of one dollar. After lengthy discussion the proposal was accepted with a few minor changes. Scugog News - Barry Prentice has gone to Mexico for a three week Christmas vacation. With Music Consultant, Mrs. Frank Hastings acting as me- diator between radio station CHOO, Ajax, and Mr. Glen Taylor as director of the 50 voices of R.H. Cornish Choir, a taping of "O Come, All Ye Faithful," was recorded for a special Christmas Day broadcast. 10 YEARS AGO Wednesday, December 10, 1980 Uxbridge Township Mayor Gary Herrema has been elected the new chairman of Durham Region. Durham Police report that "a large quantity of narcotic drugs" was taken from Durham Pharmacy in the Medical Asso- ciates building on Paxton Street. The ad. requested "ad- vanced oral and written French" - yet solely French-speaking peo- ple in Oshawa is practically non- existant 0.2 percent (1981 census). While Bourassa's Bill 178 outlawing English in Quebec, Ot- tawa spent $500 million or $1.3 million every day on official languages, as far back as 1986-87. At todays figure of $1.4 billion thats about $3.9 million a day, right out of the taxpayers pockets. Now we are to be taxed even fur- ther with a GST to pay for this ex- travagance. With 200,000 people out of work, taxes at an all time high, and welfare in Durham Region at an all time high -- could this money not be better spent? We have 100,000 people in Metro area depending on food banks for their children. Meanwhile Mulroney fritters his time and our money with a '"'circus" -- the na- tional unity facade and trying to change the Constitution to ap- pease Quebec. Meech Lake in the back door. It was one single native Canadian, Elijah Harper who saved Canadians, from the Meech Lake disaster. Why impose French on 80 per- cent of Canadians outside Quebec, when Quebec leaders including PQ Jacques Parizeau say they could care less about French out- side Quebec. Quebec will break up Canada by separating. It's only a matter of time. They will suck us dry financially and leave us to pay our monumental debt. The GST is the first step -- 7 percent now, and 10 percent or more once in place. There are no English immer- sion classes in Quebec but blatant discrimination against the Anglophones in Quebec with Bill 101 and Bill 178. Ottawa has pass- ed Bill C-72 as a federal counter- part denying English-speaking ROOKIE CAMP by John Newby '": FRAMER'S GALLERY 233 Queen St., Port Perry o (416) 985-2543 jobs in the civil service. The federal Public Service Commis- sion annual report 1989 discloses that some depts. are 100 percent French-speaking. The Law Reform Commission of Canada is 70.6 percent French, with only 29.4 English-speaking. The Federal Court is 51.7 percent French, the Public Service Com- mission 62.4 French and Chief electorial office 86.2 percent French. The competition tribunal office 70 percent French and even the Governor-Generals office is 70.7 percent French. The list goes on and on. Less than one percent of the total 52,835 government jobs in Quebec go to Anglophones! Don't think because your children learn French they will get the prime government jobs. They are reserved in the Fran- cobank for francophones. As Jean Chretien said 'you're not of the blood." Immersion is the first step in softening up Anglophones to French dominance in the job market. On the CTV network, Feb. 26/90, Statistics Canada figures revealed a 50 percent drop-out in the first 3 years of French Immer- sion Canada wide. After grade 7 only 27 percent are still in Immer- sion. The Toronto Star says "Metro students by the hundreds are saying au revoir to French Immersion - as much as 60 per- cent of students between senior kindergarten and grade 6 are quitting. One out of three parents say their kids are being left behind academically, forcing them into remedial classes."' Federal government figures -- in a 5 year period the number of bilingual Canadians increased by 9/10's of 1 percent. This means it will take 247 years to make Canada bil- ingual. Thompson News Bureau Chief at Queens Park reports that one-fifth of immersion students drop out by grade 8. Of those who continue in immersion in high school level, three quarters don't acquire the certificate for profi- ciency in French. The full two part series on the matter was titl- ed "immersion advocates don't like to discuss drawbacks." The Pasteur Institute in Paris no longer publishes in French! Only in English, as English is the language of medicine. English is the language of Commerce the world over ever since the In- dustrial revolution. English is the language of Air Traffic control the world over. It's the second language in the three most populated countries, China, Russia and India. The United Na- tions in Geneva Switzerland are about to challenge Quebec's French Bill 178 under human rights section. Even the French government will not permit TV or films dubb- ed in Quebec to be shown in France. The traffic signs in France are in English. Yet in some schools in Ontario if a stu- dent is caught speaking English in a immersion class they are sever- ly dealt with. There are 21 federal language police operating in Metro Toronto (one in Peterboro) enforcing French on all products -- often first on the labels. They confiscated British candies not labelled in French yet allow Dutch, German, Greek and Chinese candies without French labels. Bill 101 bars immigrants in Que. from English schools. Democracy is dead in Que. Never in the history of Canada have so many been taken in by so few. We are a nation of sheep. On- ly the brave actions of a single - native Canadian Elijah Harper saved Canada from French domination, along with New- foundlands Premier Wells. It was Secretary of State Serge Joyal in the Trudeau government who stated he and a number of people were engaged in the making of Canada into a French State. Mulroney follows down the same path of destroying Canada with his divisive policies. None are so blind -- as those that will not see! Sincerely, Dean J.
