I EE ey EY 36 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 11, 1990 Ivory Forest Junior ringette On December 1 the Ivory Forest Juniors travelled to Sud- bury to participate in the AA tour- nament. Saturday morning they faced the home team. Sudbury Juniors played a fast, good check- ing game. Port's shots on net totalled thirteen and of those four found their mark. During the first period Denna Lovering was the lone Port player to find a way to shoot the ring past the Sudbury goaltender. Assists were awarded to Karen Kett and Val Payne. In the second period Port fared slightly better with three more shots finding their way into the net. Val Payne scored an unassisted goal followed by Lynd- say Dutkewich who was assisted by Dawn Doucette and Denna Lovering. Port's final goal came at the 3:21 mark on a solo effort by Jennifer Josephson. Some excellent passing and good ring control by Sudbury enabled them to get away thirty- one shots and were able to capitalize on fourteen. Port's first game was fast paced and con- sisted of two twenty minute periods. The defense was con- stantly pressed into action. Kim Poppleton, Jennifer Morden, Michelle, Fitzpatrick and Tracy Pelow were constantly on their toes. The second game of the day was against Waterloo. Port Perry got off to a slow start scoring on- ly three goals to Waterloo's eight in the first period. Jennifer Josephson scored Port's first goal with some nice passing by Dawn Doucette and Lyndsay Dutkewich. A minute later Val Payne scored her first of four goals with assists going to Karen Kett and Shannon Fox. The final goal of the period was scored by Lyndsay Dutkewich. The second period told a dif- ferent story. The Port Perry girls were fired up as they took to the ice to score five goals to Waterloo's three. Denna Lovering and Shannon Fox passed the ring up to Dawn Doucette who slipped the ring past the goaltender. A well executed pass from Dawn Doucette enabled JoAnn to quick- ly skate into Kitchener's end zone effectively beating their defense to score her goal. Facing Walden in Port's final game of the tournament Kim Pop- pleton scored Port Perry's lone marker by quickly picking up a rebound and raising it over the goaltender's shoulders. Hockey nostalgia up for auction If you've been to the Scugog Arena lately, you may have notic- ed that the older Minor Hockey banners, which suffered from a slight case of mildew, have been replaced by brand new ones. A nice improvement, which was financed out of funds raised by the Executive and Directors of Port Perry Minor Hockey at the Port Perry Fair and Festival Days. The banners, which com- memorates 13 teams which won championships or were finalists between '59 and '81, are for sale through a Silent Auction. Bids are to be submitted to P.P. Minor Hockey, Box 61, Port Perry, LIL 1A2. In order that these collectors' Bill limits rent hikes Minister of Housing Dave Cooke has introduced legislation which will limit rent increases while the government develops a new system of rent control. Mr. Cooke tabled the necessary amendments to the Residential Rent Regulation Act in the legislature November 28. "The moratorium will enable us to protect tenants over the next two years, while we turn our full attention to public consultations on a permanent rent control system," Mr. Cooke said. He said the moratorium is a temporary measure to protect tenants from high rent increases allowed under the current rent review system. The moratorium rules will apply to rent increases taking effect from Oct. 1, 1990 and will continue until new rent con- trol legislation is passed. Under the moratorium, most rent increases will be limited to the guideline amount set by the Ministry each year. In 1990, the guideline is 4.6 per cent; in 1991, it is 5.4 per cent. Tenants will no longer be re- quired to pay rent increases related to luxury renovations and the flipping of apartment buildings. As well, tenants will not face rent increases arising from capital expenditures. Landlords will be allowed to seek moderate rent increases above the guideline to help cover some cost increases which are beyond their control. These are limited to significant increases in municipal taxes, heating, hydro, water, cable, in- surance and changes in interest rates on mortgage renewal. Mr. Cooke said, 'We encourage everyone in Ontario to take part in the consultations across the province on a new system of rent control." items may be distributed in time for Christmas, bids must be received by December 20 at 5° p.m..
