For most residential cus- tomers in Durham, the increase will be about 5.6 per cent, and this will add $4.42 to the water/ sewer bill that is issued every three months. The report, which goes to the full council on Wednesday for approval, says increased op- erating costs for the system, plus new capital projécts are the main reasons why the rates are goingupin 1991. One of those capital pro- jects is the financing of a water system in Greenbank at a cost of some $700,000. The report projects that the number of new water customers in Durham will increase by just 2.2 per cent, a marked decline over previous years when the growth rate was more than dou- ble that number. By the end of 1991, Dur- ham predicts there will be 96,000 customers on water ser- vice, and the total consumption will be 10.8 billion gallons, about the same last year. The report notes that wa- ter/sewer rates in Durham re- main consistent with the rates charged by other large munici- palities. The Region is predicting that residential water con- sumption this coming year will level off, and there will be an ac- tual reduction in the amount of water used by the industrial/ commercial sector as the im- pact of the recession continues through 1991. Public meeting called to get GO Train answers The Toronto/Peterburough Passenger Association wants to know why the provincial gov- ernment opted for bus service in this area, rather than a GO Train. And the Asscciation has called a public meeting for this Wednesday evening in an effort to get some answers. Seven New Democrat MPPs (from each of the ridings affected by the decision) have been invited to attend the meeting along with a rep from the transportation ministry. The meeting is expected to address several questions relat- ed to the issue of no GO Train to Peterborough. And Passenger Association members says they want as much public support as possible to show the Government they are serious in asking for the de- cision to be reversed. The meeting gets under- way at 7:00 PM, Wed. Dec. 12 at the Ashburn Community Cen- tre on the Myrtle Road, Ash- burn. clothing for women SWEATERS ... the Perfect Christmas Gift!
