14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 18, 1990 Scugog Shores Museum cu- rator/director Mary Lynne Wil- . liamson will be resigning Janu- ary 1 from the position she has held for the past two years. She's leaving to spend a | year in Port Elgin, Ont. to work hy in a bed and breakfast lodge ¥ owned by her parents. It wasn't any easy decision for Ms. Williamson, who has de- : veloped a well-earned reputa- ¥ tion in Port Perry for her hard {| . work and innovative ideas at \ the Scugog Shores Museum. i On the one hand, she hated i the thought of leaving the mu- : seum and community she en- ! Joys so much. But on the other hand, she feels an obligation to assist her parents in their busi- ness as they take a year off to do some extensive travelling. 3 But in an interview with the Port Perry Star last week, she said she has no intention of completely cutting the ties with this community. "Ill be back for Pioneer Days (in June at the Museum) and the Fall Harvest," she said. And when her year work- ing at her parents lodge is over, she plans to return to the Port ; Perry, though she won't be | 8 working at the Museum. This coming Friday (Dec. 21) the Museum directors are hosting a party in her honour at the home of chairperson Pat Boyd in Port Perry. If Looking back on her two years as curator/director of the i Museum, Ms. Williamson said she is very pleased at what she rw oon . was able to accomplish. One of the major changes was to open the Museum on a year-round basis, and start the popular programs at Christ- mas. During her tenure, an edu- cation video for use in the pri- mary grades in Durham has been completed. The video, narrated by Joel Aldred is about life in a pioneer village, and has been greeted with enthusiasm by education officials. Another major project has been to computerize the records of the some 35,000 artifacts the Museum has. Work is still progressing on this changeover from files to computer records. And the Museum is now linked by the TRILLIUM com- puter network to other mu- seums in Ontario and around the world as an effective meth- od of information exchange. "We use this alot and it has been very helpful to us," she says. In fact, the computer sys- tem is so functional that other museums are asking for advice on setting up something simi- lar. She said she is very grate- ful from the help and support she received from Board of Di- rectors and from the many vol- unteers who work at the Mu- seum. "Without their work, we would not have a museum," she said, especially for Pioneer | Local Museum Curator leaving Days and the Fall Harvest pro- grams. And the directors are very active. "They roll up their sleeves and work, it's a team ef- fort," she said. The Museum attracts some 5,000 visitors each year (not in- cluding those who attend the special events). She said one of the reasons for the Museum's successes is that the "grass roots" have not been forgotten. "It was started by local peo- ple who wanted to preserve something of their past. It's im- portant to keep this idea." A graduate of the Universi- ty of Guelph, Ms. Williamson first worked at the Sydenham Museum in Oshawa before landing the job at the Scugog Shores. In accepting the job two years ago, she said she was very impressed with the Museum and the tremendous potential it has. : And she has done a great deal in those two years to help tap that potential and make it a place of enjoyment for local resi- dents and visitors alike.
