Trudy, a junior at Dordt College, in Sioux Center, Iowa, is the daughter of Don and Mary Hoekstra and is majoring in education. The Dordt College Netherlandic Studies Program (NSP) allows students to study in facilities of the Free University of Amster- dam and absorb the history, lifestyle, and language of the Dutch people in classes and daily "activities. Professors Kornelis Boot and John Struyk of the Dordt College foreign languages depart- ment coordinate the adventure. "fhe 1991 troupe consists of seven students. from Dordt Col- lege; three from Calvin College in " Grand Rapids, Mich.; and one each from Redeemer College in Ancaster, Ontario; Occidental College in Los Angeles, Califor- nia; and Butler University in In- dianapolis, Indiana. The first four weeks of NSP orientation find the students liv- ing with Dutch families. Later they may choose to live in the Uilenstede Hospitium, the univer- sity apartments. The term involves a full course load under selected NSP instruc- tors. Intense Dutch language and literature studies are required. Optional courses deal with art and architecture, international marketing, Dutch culture and society, or history of the Netherlands and Belgium. Most class teaching begins in English and progresses to Dutch conversation. Field trips and free time to make new friends or travel to neighboring countries are also part of NSP. At the close of the session, students may qualify for the certifikaat Nederlands, a com- petence diploma that has aided several NSP participants in securing jobs with international companies. College sophomores, juniors, or seniors may apply for the annual Netherlandic Study Program. The cost is similar to a semester of U.S. college study, and scholar- ships are available. Dordt College, a Christian liberal-arts college in northwest Towa, enrolls approximately 1,000 students in more than 40 academic programs. Its students take part in various service pro- jects and academic studies out- side of the United States. Sunday, February 3rd - 11 AM to 5 PM BRIDAL SHOW 91 Tickets $6.
