YEQE9 7909 4 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 18, 1990 Deer pulled from lake in daring rescue From Page 1 But the deer, petrified by this time and doing a lot of . trashing around, dug its feet into the lake bottom just off shore. "When he dug his feet into the mud, we could not make any headway," recalled Mr. Fowler. Then one of the people on the shore slid carefully onto the ice to get a rope to the boat. "I don't know who that guy was (that slid onto the ice with the rope) but he was a real hero in this," said Mr. Fowler. With tHe rope secured to the boat, those on shore were able to drag the boat and the deer to solid round. With the confusion of the large crowd and the traffic stopped along the highway, the rescuers felt it best to move the animal to a more secluded area for release. They were able to lift it into the back of a truck and with sev- eral men carefully holding it down, they drove it to a wooded area on Scugog Island. Once released, the deer, still very frightened by the or- deal, seemed completely con- fused and just stood there star- ing at his rescuers. There were fears that the animal might still die from fa- tigue, but a check the next day revealed that he was apparent- ly all right. "Aside from the fact the deer was completely exhausted and had some scrapes on his legs from the ice, he seemed to be in good shape," said Mr. Fowler. Earlier Saturday morning Visit the festive Santa Claus Parade In a buck deer and a doe were seen in the north end of Port Perry, and it is believed this was the same buck that went into the water. The rescue attracted a large number of spectators along the causeway. Police had their hands full trying to keep traffic moving along the busy highway. And the entire drama was apparently video-taped by one of the spectators. Mr. Fowler said if the per- son who made the tape reads this account, to get in touch with him in Port Perry. "I'd like to get a copy of that tape," he said, the Minlature Christmas Village.
