Purpose. On behalf of Greenbank, Helen McKean and Barbara Ward ex- tended a warm welcome. Jackie Chappell and Wilma Smith con- ducted worship based on Ephe- sians 3:14-21, featuring the hymn, In the Circle of Each Home, Bar- bara Swain and Eileen Mark pro- vided In Memoriam focussed on the hymn, Abide with Me. The Offering was received and dedicated by Aileen Shier, Phyllis DeLaMatter and Evelyn Gormley. This will help in local efforts to put control of Municipal and Regional Councils and Education Boardsbackin the hands oftaxpayers. The Scugog Chapter will join other Durham Region Mu- nicipal chapters in joint efforts to expand monitoring of school boards and regional government. The aim is to ensure taxpay- ers get value for their tax dollars and to make our elected repre- sentatives more fiscally responsible with our money. We will be bring you comments from our officials and giv- ing the administration ideas on cutting costs. You are all part of the process. If you have any ideas send or fax them to the ad- dress below. This year in Durham, it is our opinion, it was not luck or fiscal responsibility that taxes were lower than last year. It is political reality, election years always bring the lowest tax in- crease in the three year term. As you will see from the following graph, historically tax increases are always highest the year after the election then decrease annually to the next election. CAUT will be hosting an All Candidates meeting on Octo- ber 23 at the Port Perry High School. We will be publishing an evaluation guide to measure the qualifications of the incum- bents and prospective candidates. This will help you as an elec- tor to decide which candidate will best serve your municipality and school board. We welcome your membership in CAUT. An in- vitation to come to Valentia in 1992 was extended by Barbara Swain. Jean Gorrill reported on her weekend at Quin Mo Lac. Carol Thompson, president of Lindsay Presbyterial brought greetings. Joyce Junkin brought regrets from Joyce Jones, Olive Nye, as well as her own report. As treasurer she urged contributions to Quin Mo Lac, Bursary, etc. to be in by June. She made the state- ment "Live simply that others may simply live."" Jean Gorrill urged the writing of letters to prisoners on Korea. Shirley Reesor introduced several books available in the book display. Marjorie Morrison reviewed how to cut the soup labels. Olive Rodgers spoke brief- ly of her reporting to the papers. Mary Winterbottom drew our at- tention to some paper clippings stressing the abuse of alcohol. Pat Burley mentioned that a Youth Newsletter is now available. Grace Sisson describ- ed the procedure to acquire a life membership. Janice Trimper presented some programme ideas. _ After a delicious salad luncheon Marie Hawkins led a hymn sing with Carol Kelly at the piano. The Seagrave ladies presented a skit regarding Family Violence, which really set the tone for the speaker, Patricia Zimmer, who was , introduced by Gloria Risebrough. Patricia works with Women's Safety Network. She spoke of wife assault and reasons why victims tolerate their situa- A roast beef supper was held on Thursday, May 9 at the Im- maculate Conception Church Hall. Supper organizers were very pleased with the turnout, from within the parish and the community. Roast beef and assorted vegetables were in abundance, and of course the dessert tables were not to be missed, with a delicious variety of home baked pies and fresh fruit. During the evening, a raffle was held for a decorator church plate, which was won by Mr. Bill Hall. Following dinner, entertain- ment was provided by Mr. Larry Hachey, a very talented singer tions as long as they can, Tohelp these people, we can be good listeners, don't pressure her to leave, refer her to the safety net- work and help to build her self esteem. Muriel Corneil thanked Patricia for her informative presentation. The closing hymn was 'Happy The Home" followed by the printed Benediction. Next CWL meeting June 6 and guitarist (who graciously shared the microphone for a few impromptu performances from his audience!) The supper followed a special ceremony in the church for a traditional Crowning of Mary pro- cession, in which all the various clubs in the parish participated, along with the teachers and students from Immaculate Con- ception School. Our next CWL meeting is on Thursday evening, June 6 and will include a pot-luck supper as we break for the summer months.
