No, it's not a fancy night spot for mixing and mingling. There are no flashing neon signs and no loud music. But the Chalk Lake Spring is a source of refreshment for thousands. People arrive at the spring ' daily from all over Durham and many parts of southern Ontario to fill jugs and containers of all shapes with the clean, spark- ling fresh water. And last week, politicians and officials with Durham Re- gion held a short ceremony to "officially open" the spring and unveil a small plaque. For those who don't know, the spring is located on Durham Road 23 near Chalk Lake and close to the new Lakeridge Ski Resort. Nobody is sure exactly when people first started to draw drinking water from the spring, though some suggest the practise has been going on for atleast 100 years. What is known is that health officials have been test- ing the quality of the water since 1966. Up until last year, the out- fall where people filled their containers with water was lo- cated on the east or Scugog side of Durham Road 23. But last summer, the out- fall was moved to the west side of the road, thanks to Lakeridge Resorts, which donated land for a proper parking area. In the past, motorists would stop on the shoulder of the busy road, and with so many people crossing the highway there were serious concerns for public safety. Now, people can park their vehicles safely in the lot, fill their containers from any of five pipes that carry the water.
