When business is good, it pays to advertise... When business Is bad, you've got to advertise! i ~ game is the fan. portant to anyone. they are being rooted for. Pulling No Punches N by Kelly Lown | have watched, and played many sports for many years, and | still believe one of the most important elements of the Fans are one of the very important highlights of any match. The reaction of a delighted, or disgusted fan often makes the difference between an exciting or boring game, I have heard a lot of complaining over the years about loud fans hollering and yelling in the stands, and players and coaches wanting them ejected. If all fans who let go of their . inhibitions were to be ejected, the game would not be as imi- | have often found myself watching the crowd instead of the game, and have seen many a player whether on the ice, field, or ball diamond miss an event in their own game, be- cause they too are watching the fans in amusement. I have seen it all, the fan who is so disgusted he is swear- ing at the referee (although sometimes they certainly need a word or two), throwing things at players, threatening other fans, and mimicking the opposition just to get a reaction out of someone. As long as it is not carried too far, as some we allknow have, itis all part of the game taking place. Whatever it is that makes fans see red, clench their teeth, and have clammy hands, | hope it continues. | myself feel that a sport without the fans would not be very powerful. A player enjoys playing for a large crowd, the adrenalin flows, it pumps them up, they want to perform better because Although the fan can sometimes be a little irate, a little overzealous, | say let them holler all they want. If fans didn't care about their team, the team will not likely care as much about their success either. Players play for the fans as well as themselves. Lown's Downs Brought up in a family of sports crazed men, I've always kept an eye on the newspaper's sports section , keeping my mind sharp in case I'm quizzed on recent sports happenings. Anyone who follows sports has their own viewpoint of hap- penings, just as | have my own. -Ben Johnson ran his best time yet on the week-end, but was still way off the pace by what is considered a large margin in a sprinters race. But | am still on the Ben bandwagon, and think the best is yet to come. He is going to surprise even the biggest skeptic. -I'm not too sure why people are upset that Rob Ramage is gone from the Leafs. Ithink it is finally time for them to recruit a player who can get the puck out of his own end, which Ramage could never do. The Leafs were looking at Ramag- es' yesteryears, trying to make a leader out of a has-been. -The first Blue Jay game that | attended after the acquisition of Mookie Wilson, | was like many and thought he was being booed, instead of the Mooooo.. kied, but lately I've been wondering, and maybe Mookie has too, if those noises haven't changed to resounding Boo's.
