26 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 20, 1991 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Mini soccer Cup Day to be held Aug. 24 The mini soccer season is near- ing an end, with the last regular game being played this week. Cup Day will be Aug. 24, when all mini teams will play two games bet- ween 11 a.n® and 1 p.m. at the soccer fields. For anyone in- terested, mini soccer is always entertaining and often comical to watch. Last Tuesday night IGA defeated the hapless Fowler, Davies team 2-0. Both goals were scored by Matthew Kaminga. Lori Powell and Laura Batterink played a good running game, keeping the ball around the Fowler, Davies net. Adam Smart had some good shots on goal, and Brittany Zochodne got the shut- out for IGA. Robert Mark managed to keep the first half of the game scoreless in net for Fowler, Mites begin playoffs D.J. Taylor Insurance played its first game of the playoffs against P.P.M.S. with D.J. Taylor Insurance winning 9-5. It was a well played game by both teams with good plays and hits by P.P.M.S. were John Bacon - two hits, Erin Lane two walks and a good assist, Dianne Burnett - a good game. For D.J. Taylor Insurance, Shane Robinson - two walks, Lisa LeFort - two hits, Dave Justinsky - three hits. Davies, and Ryan Mowat con- tinued to show improvement, get- ting his foot on the ball several times. The Lions Club fell to Bruton's IDA by a score of 3-0. Bruton's at- tributes their successful evening to the outstanding play of Michael Sheehan. Despite the loss, the Lions Club had good goaltending efforts from Tim Donohue and Scott Martin. Chet Martin played a strong game throughout. Williams' Arms and Taylor Home Fuels played an exciting game to a 1-1 tie. Keri Vernooy scored for Williams' Arms and both Alexander McRae and Marie Gedge played well. Zack Pither tied the game for Taylor Home Fuels, on an assist from Marlie Bates. On Wednesday evening, Sport- sland dominated Ridge North Realty and won their game 5-0 thanks to great play by Erin Ed- wards and Matthew Sutherland. Erin opened the scoring with a great shot, which was followed by a goal by Matthew. Erin got the next two to earn her a hat-trick. Matthew got his second goal to make it a five goal game. Ridge North demonstrated good passing ability and made some good defensive plays. Chad Sansborough made some great kicks from the center line. Darlene Colton Photography just edged out Big V by a score of 1-0. Jessica Houthuys scored the game winner, assisted by James Colton. Alex McKay had a strong game for Big V, in one of the only games he has been held scoreless this year. Honorable mention goes to Jordan Beelby for good effort.
