"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 27, 1991 - 35 162-km road trip Lake Scugog tour attracts 240 cyclists Did you notice the unusually large number of cyclists on the road Sunday morning? Most of them were wearing helmets and moving along at a fairly swift pace. They were Fond for Durham College by the scenic route, which in this case meant riding 162 kilome- tres around Lake Scugog first. The annual Scugog Circle Century Cycle Tour was "the best yet," said the tour's co- ordinator, Alan Saunders. The tour, organized by the Oshawa Cycling Club, started between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. at Durham College. The cyclists rode north, travelling through Port Perry, Seagrave, Little Britain, Lindsay, Omemee, Bethany, Mosport, and back to the college. There were only 25 riders. when the tour began eight years ago, but this year 240 riders registered for the tour, Mr. Saunders explained. The cyclists were from as far away as St. Catharines, Kitch- ener, Sudbury and Ottawa, he said. The youngest was only 15-years-old and the oldest was age 66. Although it wasn't a race, he stressed, the fastest group completed the loop around the lake in two hours and 18 min- utes. Only six cyclists didn't com- plete the course, and there was an unexpected detour at Lind- say, but "we had nothing but compliments after," he said. "Some years, we're waiting almost until dark for strag- glers to come in," he said. "This year we were blessed with beautiful weather." The last cyclist took nine hours to complete the tour, rolling into the parking lot at Durham College at 6 p.m. The club was fully prepared for the rigours of the road. Four service vehicles and two ambulances were following the tour route, and members of the Durham Massage Therapists Association were at the college to ease the cyclist's aching muscles after the race. The Scugog Circle Century Cycle Tour won the Best Tour of Ontario award from the On- tario Cycling Association two yearsin a row.
