Prepare your home for fall and winter Are you a procrastinator when it comes to home repairs? Do you habitually put off checking things like the flashing around your chimney, or the state of your shingles, downspouts or eavestroughs? If so, you may want to take full advantage of the Labor Day weekend to give your home a thorough top- to-bottom inspection so both you and your home are well- prepared for fall and winter. Although the threat of sleet and snow is still a long way off, you may find that an ounce of prevention now could save you a lot of headache -- and possible more expense -- later on. You'll also find that it's easier -- not to mention more enjoyable and less rushed -- to do a lot of this work now. You may even find it's easier to book ap- pointments for certain types of professional repairs before the tradi- tional fall rush begins. Before you begin your ac- tual inspection, it's a good idea to make a thorough checklist. Then, walk around your house a few times. As you go around, check for different things, like loose or missing mor- tar, damaged bricks, holes, loose or damaged siding, rotting window sills or door frames, and loose or dilapidated downspouts. Be sure to make a note of where repairs are required and how bad the damage is. RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE COUNTRY LANE REALTY LTD. Also be sure to check your patio, porch or deck for signs of damage. Take a good look at the railings, steps and beams -- not to mention damaged floor- boards. Be sure to repair these areas quickly, since they can pose a major safe- ty hazard. Don't forget to take a good look at the garage, if you have one.
