"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" Lette I'S tothe editor Club closing unfortunate To the Editor: I am writing to state my sur- prise at the Star for not covering the closure of the Port Perry Athletic Club. First of all it af- fected many residents of Port who were members and lost money. It's been at least three weeks and there has been no write-up at all on it. Since the closing of the club there have been many rumors re: the club and it's owners. By repor- ting on the club it would have cleared the air and informed any members who were unaware of the closure and could have helped the members and employees try- ing to get their money owed to them. It's really too bad the club clos- - ed because it had potential and all this does is set a bad example for any good clubs trying to make it. Having taught aerobics for seven years I have seen many clubs go under and they all seem to have one flaw in common and that is no respect or concern for their members. But buyer beware, you can't go joining a club blind, you have to educate yourself first. Before joining ask what the qualifica- tions of the instructors are, they should have some certification in aerobics, what is the membership structure, go to other clubs and see what they have, ask questions and read up on it. Currently there is a club in town that is very good. The Delta Fitness Centre on Casimir Street. They have a gym and offer aerobics three mornings a week by a certified instructor and two evenings a week. Well I hope that maybe my let- ter will start someones pen going and we can get some much need- ed information on the Port Perry Athletic Club. Thank you, Kim McCann Court ruling results in unequal justice system To the Editor: Re: M. Duffy's column - Toron- to Sunday Sun, August 25, 1991 Contrary to the opinion of Mr. Duffy, the recent Supreme Court of Canada ruling, which in effect struck down the Rape Shield Law, is not a cause for celebration, but is rather a catastrophic regres- sion to the cause of 'Justice' in Canada. It does not as claimed, place men and women on an '"'equal" stand before the law, but does rather continue to advance the rights of (the) accused men far beyond those of their women victims. In a legal system in which the accused man is not compelable to give testimony, notwithstanding he may have a lengthy history of violent crimes against women; a legal system in which the ac- cuseds' past history of similar of- fence(s) cannot be entered into evidence against him, but where the previous sexual history of his victim may be subject to ex- amination in order to consider her complicity if any in the crime committed against her, is a legal system which can neither be ap- plauded as being just or equal. It is interesting and dismaying to note that the three examples given by Mr. Duffy in his editorial, have no. relevance to the question at hand, but rather deal with other matters of the law, and therefore, tends to detract from the whole purpose of his effort. Their Lordships of the Supreme Court of Canada are continuing to propagate the incorrect assertion that rape is a sexual act. Rape is not sex any more than armed robbery is merely a withdrawal of money from the bank. Rape is a violent criminal assault in which the man's penis is used either in place of or in ad- dition to a knife, hammer or any other type of weapon, committed for the sole purpose of causing the women physical and emotional suffering. I would respectfully remind Their Lordships that agree or not even a prostitute has the right to say NO at any given time and on any given occasion.
