"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" Letter S to the editor Mother Jackson's dispute To the Editor: It is with interest that I have been following the noise con- troversy between residents of Heath Crescent and Mother Jacksons. I can only assume that both parties want this situation resolved and that they are all reasonable people. : I'would like to suggest a course of action that hopefully would resolve the dispute to everyone's satisfaction. Noise tests are required for resolution. The residents want to know whether the noise levels are too high. I am also sure that because of their desire to be a goad neighbor management of Mother Jacksons would like to know if the noise levels are too high so that they could take cor- rective action. This, obviously, was the reason for council having authorized the original noise test. Mr. Cuddie's action of advising Mr. Jermyn of the time of the up- coming test created the percep- tion that noise levels from the plant were reduced during the day of the tests. As Mrs. Pearce rightly observed, it would appear that the tests were not conducted fairly. The typical Canadian prac- tice of forming a committee to in- vestigate the problem merely pushes the problem into the background and allows frustra- -tion to build to a high level. The letter published in last week's paper is an example of this. Management of Mother Jacksons, being sure that the noise levels are below the accep- table standard, should have nothing to fear by having a third party do the tests and therefore CON NEAT \o should agree to having the tests repeated without previous knowledge of the time these tests would take place. Because of their desire to be a good neighbor and to resolve the situation, Mother Jacksons should offer to finance a repeat of the noise test and not receive any prior notice of the time of the tests. These tests obviously could be written off as an expense of the firm and would have little impact on the finances of the company, but the public relations benefit would be great. If I were Mr. Jer- myn, I would also offer to pay for the test to take place on three separate, but not necessarily con- secutive, days to ensure the noise levels were recorded when the plant was operating normally. This generous gesture would com- municate to the residents this desire to resolve the dispute. Should management of Mother Jackson's refuse to finance these tests, they are communicating to the community that there is a noise problem that they do not in- tend to correct. The township and the residents of Heath Crescent would also not be advised of the planned dates of these tests. Both parties would agree to abide by the results of these fair- ly conducted tests. To ensure that the tests were conducted fairly, they would take place under the supervision of a third party, without an interest in the dispute and agreeable to both the management of Mother Jacksons and the residents.
