PIII gn PT a a "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 17, 1991 - 15 Lack of Scout leaders limits local enrollment Scouts Canada believes that every person should have the op- portunity to meet and face the real world and experience as full a community life as his capabilities allow. It is the moral right and privilege of any boy/adult to join the Scouting organization if they adhere to the Aim & Principals of Boy Scouts of Canada. Baden Powell said, "Scouting is for all who want and can use it." Kemp says he's ready From Page 4 community." He is supportive of restructuring the plan to pro- vide Scugog with better oppor- tunities. As an executive Mr. Kemp will fight the issue of the land- fill site in Scugog, which he la- bels "an inevitable disruption to our lives." He says the large urban centres to the south must find their own methods of waste management. He argues the whole site search process is an interrup- tion as people are putting off decisions until they know where the site will be. "I think it's bad that we're left in limbo. people don't want to live in lim- Mr Kemp knows the race for the regional chair will be along, tough battle, and he is prepared for the challenge. At the mo- ment he is only facing the in- cumbent, Yvonne Christie, but knows of her popularity in the area. "I'm ready for it. I've done a lot of research. It will be an ex- tension of what I'm doing, and maybe there'll be some good come out of it. I will make it a full-time job," he said. Mr. emp, who is the first to admit that he is "strong-willed" and "impatient" says he may even change as a result of this experience. "I'll try to be more diplomatic," he said. "Diploma- cy does have its advantages." Always a strong opponent of the system, Mr. Kemp has one fear. What if he gets in and be- comes part of the system? He says he will cross that bridge when he comes to it, but vows he will "fight like hell to change it." r Welcome to Prince ) Albert United Church 120th Anniversary Monday, Sept. 23 7:30 pm Dofasco Male Choir - $8.00 - pre-school free sunday, Sept. 29 9:00 am Pancake Breakfast - Free 2:00 pm Anniversary Service Guest: Ann Squires former moderator, Banner Dedication 4:30 - 6:00 pm Salad Buffet Supper - $8.00 7:00 - 9:00 pm A Musical Program Director: Darryl Linnington, Offering 985-3017 or 985-3143 & or J - The Scouting year has started for many youths in Scugog Township but some youths are be- ing denied the chance to join. Why? Because there just are not enough leaders to provide the pro- gram so some boys are put on a waiting list. Although some parents who are also doctors, policemen, housewives, supervisors and shift workers have time to come out to help as leaders in the Scouting program there just are not enough. At a time when young boys need to belong to a program that provides outdoor skills and fun through learning, it is hard to find enough people to give up their time. _ It would be easy to let all boys Join and go with the existing leaders but this would only pro- vide a poor program that neither the boy or the leader would have fun belonging to. Oh yes, the leaders do have fun, sometimes as much as the youth. Most leaders start with no ex- perience except the interest of providing boys with fun, discovery and learning. There is always training available for new leaders to take so they can learn the skills they are not confident in. Although the local service groups and churches provide the space to hold the meetings, the public support the groups finan- cially. The boys want to join, we lack the few extra leaders we need. Within Pine Ridge District we are fortunate to have excellent leaders and support people who have provided a good program that the youths want to join and stay with. Please consider joining a successful program with suc- cessful leaders who are looking for a few more helpers. Please contact a group near you or call Lloyd Greenough for more infor- mation at 985-8047.
