N. Watson and Associates consulting firm. The firm has suggested the township increase its develop- ment charge to $4,249 from $2,600 on a single family dwell- ing Fhe idea received no opposi- tion from members of council who believe the increase is jus- tifiable. Freezing salaries From Page 1 receive an additional $2,500. That amount is in addition to the salary they receive from sitting on municipal govern- ment. Locally, Scugog Town- ship councillors receive $12,500 a year. The mayor re- ceives an annual remuneration of $19,000. A new salary scale for re- gional politicians will be set in December. "I saw the study as being rea- sonable," said Ward 4 council- lor Glenn Malcolm. "If we don't get the increased cost from the developer, the present taxpayer would have to pay some of the costs from here onin." Regional councillor Yvonne Christie said she does not find the local levy exorbitant. "We know what's ahead of this municipality. The num- bers make sense and are justifi- able," she said. Ward 2 councillor Marilyn Pearce said the township's cur- rent development charge is "much lower than in other mu- nicipalities." "It has put us behind the Right ball," she said. "People have bought houses at the low levies and we haven't been able toget the reserves up." Brock is the only township in Durham Region with a lower levy than Scugog. Uxbridge also charges a tax of $2,500. Whitby has the highest devel- opment charge at $3,913. Ajax, Oshawa, Newcastle and Picker- ing follow in that order. But not everyone in the coun- cil chambers was happy with the suggested increase. Ron Armstrong, a land devel- opment consultant speaking on behalf of Cameo Investments, appeared before council on Monday to request a reduction inthe increase. "The building industry is in terrible straits at this time," he said. "If an increase is at all needed, we ask that you keep it toa minimum." He said developers did not complain when the levy was raised during the good times, and asked that council return the gesture. "Please, wait until things get better," he asked of council. "The time justisn't right." Council is expected to discuss the subject again at its next meeting on Monday, Oct. 21. Due to the development charges act, Scugog Township must have a new lot levy bylaw intact by Nov. 23. Lot levies are a tax charged to developers on each new home they construct. The money raised from municipal lot levies is used, in part, to fund roads, parks, recreation, libraries and redepartments.. BIGES BUFFET EAST OF METRO! Sr = \ __j SSA = LAY.
