"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 22, 1991 - 29 Two comeback victories for Malmont Atom A squad On October 15, Port Perry's Atom "A" rep team travelled to Peterborough for their first road game of the year. The first period was dominated by our hosts due to their strong forechecking and our teams' Jitters." After several tough saves by Port goalie Daniel Lee the home team took ad- vantage of a line-change to grab a 1-0 lead. Early in the second period the '"goalie's best friend" helped prevent a second Peter borough goal. The Malmont team picked up the pace at this point and tied the score when defenceman Casey VanSchagen stole the puck on ModJacks win and tie with Eagles From Page 28 who lost his life tocancer after a courageous 11-year battle. He was just 25. Robert participated in all sports in the community and had a particular interest in bas- ketball. The pre-game an- nouncement and moment of si- lence was a gesture of sincere sympathy to the Burnett family on behalf of the Port Perry Mo- Jacks organization. The Modacks opened the scoring in this game with a power-play goal by John Lally, and Jim Vernon capitalized on a breakaway to give them a two-goal lead. The Eagles managed a pow- er-play goal of their own, but only 31 seconds later Mike Coulson found his scoring stride and it was 3 to 1 at the end of the first period. There was no scoring in the second frame. Basil Luciano, making his second start of the season in goal for the MoJacks, and Chris Massey, the Eagles' netminder, made several good saves. Massey was, perhaps, the most fortunate as the Mo- Jacks rifled four shots off the post. But the Eagles fought back with two unanswered counters in the third period to tie the game. Scott Erickson gave Port Perry a 4 to 3 edge, but it was 985-8552 Durharn Stearn LOOSE RUGS UPHOLSTERY 3M Scotchguard Scott Erickson short-lived as Bowmanville tal- lied again, and that was the end of the scoring. Even the five- minute sudden-death overtime failed to break the 4-4 deadlock. The MoJacks will play the Uxbridge Bruins Friday night in the Uxbridge arena. Game time is 8:30 p.m. And Sunday they play the Bruins again at home in the Scugog Arena. That gameis a 7:30 p.m. start. (LFA \V [ee] \N] (0) D4.5 Cove Bs 00 (white) per sq. (approx. 100 sq.ft.) The second period remained tight with Peterborough com- ing close on a 2-on 1 break. On yet another chance defense- man Jeff Ashton dove across his own crease to make a stick save but in the ensuing scram- ble a penalty shot was award- ed to Peterborough. At this point Corey Branton was be- tween the pipes and he had no chance at all against a nice deke by the Peterborough shooter. With only 30 seconds left in the second period the home team scored again on a 3-on 1 break. The situation was looking bleak by now, but Corey and his teammates weren't pre- pared to quit. Early in the third period centre Seth Gray came close with a shot off the goal post on a breakaway. With the host-team short- handed our team started a comeback when Casey scored again from the side of the slot on an assist by Derek Tindall. Now the "Petes" started to panic and took several need- less penalties. Dillan Weber potted the tying goal on an as- sist by Justin Kowalczyk. The exciting comeback was completed when Adam Jones scored on a 2-on-1 break using his winger as a decoy. Chris Jones gained an assist on the goal. Lots of credit to our "A's" for a gritty effort and compo- sure in avoiding retaliation penalites when our hosts switched to a very 'rough' style of play. On October 18th, our team was at home against the rival squad from Uxbridge and the visitors took advantage of a power-play for a 1-0 lead. They came close again when a shot deflected harmlessly off our goalpost. With our lines not clicking on passes in the offensive zone the visitors won the first period. In the second period our spark-plug Casey again got his team charged up when he stole the puck in the "Bruins" end, skated in and scored on a low shot to the stickside to tie the score. Late in the period Malmont had a 3-on-1 power- play chance foiled by Ux- bridge. Momentum built for Port Perry in the final period and they grabbed the lead when Scott Jeffrey assisted on Ca- sey's second goal of the game. With the lead our forwards did some good neutral zone check- ing to limit any Uxbridge re- covery. Late in the third peri- od Scott Harper and the other 'blue-liners" played well with Port playing 2 men short. Our 4-1 victory was cement- ed in the third period on goals by Seth Gray from Dillan We- ber and Casey, as well as by Justin Sheehey on a nice play from behind the net by Brad Johnston and an assist by Troy Campbell. Two games-two comeback victories-good effort guys! Good luck in your Trenton tournament next week.
