Members of the Sonya Presbyterian Church met in the Sunday School rooms to honor their minister and his wife Rev. and Mrs. R.J. Stewart. Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Gerrow were taken by surprise when their family gathered at their home to help celebrate the cou- ples' 25th wedding anniversary. Those attending presented the guests of honor with a silver tea service. My and Mrs. Fred Brown have just returned from a trip to Florida. 35 YEARS AGO Thursday, October 25, 1956 A bylaw has been approved by the Municipal Board to issue $50,000 in debentures for an addition to Central High School in Blackstock. Miss Chrysler, a teacher at Port Perry High School present- ed a travelogue on her trip to the British Isles, France, Bel- gium and Switzerland at the Scugog and Reach teacher's ban- quet held in the Sunday School rooms of the United Church. Mrs. Margaret Jeffrey was elected as Worthy Matron for the Blue Ray Chapter of the Eastern Star. Grant Beacock won first prize for the best decorated basket in the Scout Apple Day contest. 30YEARS AGO Thursday, October 26,1961 At a public meeting held in the Port Perry Council rooms citizens committee was formed to look into installing flood lights in a ball park in Port Perry. The committee consists of Mr. Jackson, Roy Cornish, Howard Hall, Roger Oke, Norm Powell, Elmer Lee, John Ballard, Bruce Beare and others. The Uxbridge football team visited Port Perry High School and were defeated 19 to 6. Port Perry touchdowns were made by Chic Carnegie, Bob Snelgrove and Bob Geffs. 25 YEARS AGO Thursday, October 27, 1966 James Purvis of Port Perry was recenly honored on the oc- casion of fifty years membership in the Masonic Lodge. He was presented with a 50 Year certificate from F.T. Cameron of Wynyard, Saskatchewan. Local donations to the new Port Perry Hospital fund now total $30,000 and the campaign is progressing well. A plaque is being inscribed for all contributions of memorial or a com- memorative nature. Peel's Poultry Farm shipped 23,000 day-old breeder chicks to Mexico City by a chartered DC-3 aircraft. This was the first time a broiler breder farm has required chartered aircraft service for their product. Youngsters wanting to play hockey during the 1966 season are to register Oct. 29 at the arena. The fee is $10 for a season membership. : 20YEARS AGO Wednesday, October 27,1971 Dr. M.B. Dymond has returned to the provincial legislature for his fifth consecutive term of office. Mrs. Elmer Wilson of Epsom attended a Pioneer Girls Re- treat at Elim Lodge, Peterborough on the weekend. Port Perry Junior Farmers placed very well in the recent Ontario County 4-H Championship show held at Uxbridge Fair. Judged by Cliff Lillico, Woodville, the winners included: Mary Jane Crosier for Senior Ayrshire Calf; Brian Knight- Junior Guernsey Calf and Ian Polkinghorne who was award- ed the Orvan Chambers trophy for the champion exhibit 4-H Holstein Calf. 10YEARS AGO Wednesday, October28,1981 A 35-year-old Port Perry man, Bill Kendry, went without food for five nights when he went missing in the rugged bush country of northern Ontario. Aside from frost-bitten feet, Mr. Kendry looked remarkably fit after his ordeal when he at- tended a welcome home party thrown by friends. Port Perry High School graduate, John Wynsma was se- lected to represent Canada at an International Mastermind tournament held in Egypt. Merril Van Camp was re-elected president of the Durham- York Progressive Conservative Riding Association. Scugog Choral Society is busy preparing for the upcoming production of "Brigadoon". The Port Perry High School girls field hockey team reached the semi-finals in LOSSA playdowns last week by winning one game and tying two before going down in defeat tq Picker- ing by a 1-0 score. But Rick Bain, the victim's father, has not I given up hope that his daughter's body will be found.
