"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 19, 1991 - 13 From Page 1 month and has regained 85-90 _per cent use of his leg. "I have to get a little more rest than I used to," he says, but one wouldn't know it if they saw him at work. The Star recently caught up with the chairman at his 800- acre dairy farm located north of Uxbridge on Regional Road 1. The farm has been in the family for three generations. It started out as his father's farm, but now, because of his full time job at the region, Chairman Herrema's sons oversee most of the operation. But that doesn't mean the re- gion's top political figure stays away from the farming opera- on. He helps whenever he can during the harvest season -- £0 P Gary Herrema started his political career as a deputy Will try for one they plant corn, barley, hay, and soyabeans -- and on week- ends he helps out with the milk- ing and works on a list of jobs his sons compile for him. When the Star arrived, the morning milking had already been completed, but instead of taking this reporter inside for a cup of coffee on this very cold Saturday morning, Chairman Herrema let her tag along while he worked on his list of chores. His first order of business was to take the garbage to the dump -- a brave move consider- ing that the garbage issue has been the council's most conten- tious issue for some time now. During the landfill and gar- bage debate that has filled the council chambers for more than three years, the chairman Kd fis 2: reeve In the former Scott Township 20 years ago. He dropped out of local politics when Durham Region was in- corporated, but two years later he re-entered the political ring and worked his way to the region's top seat. Although the Scott Landfill Site is located one concession west of the chairman's home, the dump is directly across from his property. In fact, the route taken to the dump was via the back laneway . But even though he lives be- side a landfill site, Chairman Herrema was not popular dur- ing the great garbage debate. His council took a public lash- ing from residents living on or beside five proposed landfill sites in the region for Durham- use only. In hindsight, he said the re- gion may have been too far re- moved while the consultants prepared the report and per- aps a site should have been se- lected in each municipality. If this had been the case, he said more residents would be apply- ing the 3R rules -- reducing, reusing and recycling. The provincial NDP govern- ment has since taken over the waste management responsi- bilities. "It's a real relief that (Envi- more term as chairman Farming, politics a way of life for Herrema ronment Minister Ruth Grier) has taken it off our hands politi- cially, but the community will be worse off," he said. "Some community is going to become a victim," he continued adding garbage should be tak- en to a community that wants it such as Kirkland Lake. While the chairman unload- ed the weekly refuse, the Star kept a close eye on the garbage and found nothing that was re- cyclable or reuseable. He says the family reuses, recycles and composts as much of its waste as possible. One of the reuse projects the farm employs is reusing old - newspapers to clean cow's ud- ders before milking. Not only do they reuse the newspapers, but Chairman Herrema says they probably save $40 on paper towels a month. Upon returning to the farm, the interview continued in the milkhouse where the chairman scrubbed down the garbage pails and anything else that ap- peared to have even the small- est amount of dirt on it. His son Howie joined us soon after to tell the chairman a neighbor had called to com- plain about senseless vandal- ism to a number of 9-1-1 emer- gency response signs. So it was back into the truck to check the situation out. On route, Chairman Herre- ma admitted there are too ° many levels of government and too much over-lapping within the different levels. If he succeeds in his bid for reappointment, he would like to initiate changes and let the municipalities handle more of the responsibilities. "People don't know who to talk to anymore," he said. "There's too much cross juris- diction in what we're doing." He said people know less about regional government now than they did when it was first created. "There was so much hostility when it was created that people ! did their research." But that has all changed and the chairman hopes to estab- lish a public awareness pro- gram to "make people more aware of what the region does and the local level does." He said the restructuring process may not be popular, but { it is necessary if the region' wishes to "get our house in or- der" for the 21st century. : Cina. ------- --- EVERYWHERE! | PONTIAC SUNBIRDS In Stock and Coming 1992 PONTIAC SUNBIRD AIR CONDITIONING 4 Cyl.
