28 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 19,1991 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Disappointing showing for Malmont Atoms in Huntsville Last weekend the Port Perry Malmont Atom A squad travelled to Huntsville for tournament play. In their first game of the tournament they faced Wal- kerton who were wide awake and ready for hockey as they skated to a 3-0 shutout victo- oy. All of the scoring was in e second period of this game which saw a listless effort by our whole team as well as be- ing handicapped by having to serve four more penalties than our opponents. A more spirited effort was apparent in the second game of the day against Kincardine and we got off to a good start with a 1-0 lead after the first riod on a goal by Dillan We- ber. assisted by Seth Gray and Derek Tindal. Corey Branton made a nice save on a partial breakaway to help win the pe- riod. Unfortunately this good start wasn't sustained and Kincardine came back to score four goals, one short-handed. The final result was a 4-2 Mal mont loss. Our other scoring play was on a nice wrist-shot to the corner by Brad John- ston from Dillan and Justin Sheehey. In the Kincardine game Corey was injured in a goal- mouth collision and taken to hospital but thankfully wasn't seriously injured and goalie Daniel Lee had to handle the backstop duties for the re- mainder of the tournament. Some inconsistent referee calls resulted once again in a surplus of short-handed play by the Malmont squad. For their third game in a span of eight hours our lads faced off against Parry Sound. By now their skating legs were a little wobbly but they battled to keep the score close in a 3-2 loss. We scored to tie the game at 1-1 in the first pe- riod when Dillan popped in a rebound on an assist by Seth. Also in the first Derek was foiled by a good save on his partial breakaway. Port scored the last goal of the game on a solo end-to-end effort by Casey VanSchagen (assists by Dillan and Seth). The absence of in- jured Troy Campbell plus the additional five minutes of pen- alties taken by the Malmonts in this game required consid- erable line-juggling by the coaching staff (as indeed had been necessary throughout the tournament). All in all, it was a disap- pointing day for the Malmonts as their overall play was below the standard they had been displaying in recent weeks and perhaps they were a little tentative in their play with ru- mors of roster changes and having to adjust to differing line-mates necessitated by our injuries. The championship game of the tournament saw the host Huntsville team win out in a tight 3-2 squeaker over the Walkerton team. This game was a delight to watch as both teams displayed total team work with tremendous pass- ing, excellent positional play and controlled determination. Port Perry congratulates and thanks Huntsville and their players! Next Malmont hockey ac- tion at home will be on Friday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. against Pick- ering. Let's go team-get that enthusiasm and "winning " at- titude back! Lake Scugog Lumber defeats Gord Lewis in Atom house league P.A. Day Nov. 15, Scugog Lumber vs Gord Lewis Motors. This game got off to a flying start with Chris Orr blasting one in from the blue line on nifty passes from Jonathon Reed and Ben Stephenson. Mark Sauter upped it to 2-0 from Steven Martyn and John Bacon. Jonathon Reed scored his first of three from John Chambers and Steven. In the second period Travis Pickard fired a bullet in the top corner from Ben and Chris. Reed notched his second from Mark and Ben. Chad Lance finally got the home side of the board on assists from Scott Wilman and Daniel Lee. Steve then replied for Scugog from John and Jared Painter. John Chambers banged one in from Jonathon and Bill Buston. Lewis roared right back with Ashley Murphy scoring unassisted and Chad Lance from Eric Wygerde. Bill Buston then dented the twine from Travis and Steven. Then Jonathon rounded out the scoring from Ben and Chris. The score was no indication of the fast pace and termined ef- fort of Lewis Motors. Good game guys. Scugog 9 - Lewis 3. Nov. 16, Scugog vs Lions This is the matchup everybody was waiting for and nobody left disappointed. Travis Pickard opened the scoring from John Bacon and Chris Orr. In the se- cond period Scugog built up a two goal lead on a trickler over the goal line by Mark Sauter from Jonathon Reed. Josh Martyn got Lions on the board, from Scott Cunningham. That's how the game ended, 2-1 - for Scugog, but the play was from end to end from start to finish. Tom Keebler and Jonathon Froats made many fine saves, with good defence from both teams. OVER RIDGE RETAIL 60 VanEdward Drive, Unit 7 Port Perry, Ontario 985-075 = Ajax defeats XL Gas Bar Eaglettes by a 11-4 score Showing the effects of a week off in the league schedule, the Novice XL Gas Bar Eaglettes fell behind to the visiting Ajax 2 squad. Responding to this, Melissa Hooker evened the score with an unassisted goal. Ajax stretched the score to 4-1 before Julia Leaman, with the assist to Melissa got Port closer. The Eaglettes continued to struggle as Ajax again stretched their lead. Late in the first period goals by Miranda .Burgess assisted by Leanne Davison and by Melissa again unassisted made the game close with Ajax leading 5-4. This was as close as the XL Gas Bar Eaglettes were going to be. In the second period the Ajax team picked up the pack and never looked back. Despite the 11-4 final score the girls' effort was not lacking. All the players are trying their very best and the sportsmanship is outstanding. Our two wins, two losses places us in the middle of the pack in this competitive league. Keep up the good work everyone. More fun is on the way. Advanced Tykes On Saturday night Brook's Feed played Uxbridge Bruins in Uxbridge. Trevor Lance scored the only goal for Brook's Feed, unassisted, in the first two minutes of the game. The final score was 4-1 for Uxbridge. Even though Brook's Feed lost, it was an exciting game for parents and players as it was their first game with referees. time clock, and full ice. Allen Siding Tweens lose tough 5-4 match to Oshawa team Allen's Siding Products Tween "A" Ringette team met up with an Oshawa team at home ice on Nov. 17. Once again Oshawa showed a lot of hustle and cons- tant determination. This young team trains and skates 12 mon of the year (and it shows). Port girls got off to a little less than crisp start despite a loud and fast warm up! However, they were quick to retaliate once Oshawa scored the opener. Brandy Harris netted a fine shot unassisted to tie the game at 8:32. Oshawa manag- ed to get behind our strong defense and foiled Katie to take the lead and then upped their margin again to make it 3-1. Port girls' spirit arose and with 34 seconds left in the first period, Lynda Payne tipped a pass into the net. This goal was assisted by Bonni-Jo Norton and Jenny Storms. The second period was see-saw action with Oshawa scoring again early. Port bolted back to tie it up with two more goals. Receiving another great pass from Bonni- Jo, Brandy saw a hole and took advantage of it with her powerful shot. With two of Port's girls put- ting in time in the penalty, box Jenny got a hold of a rebound and shot the ring between the goalie's legs. Good work girls, being two players short. Throughout the game Katie Senyk had numerous hard shots blasted at her from all directions but managed to deflect them off her shoulder, stick and skate. Laura Hooker played a mean and tough game on defense, a brand new position for her, but she showed she can handle it quite nicely. Cara Vander Slagt played a dynamite game popping up everywhere, checking like the best and just missed batting a re- bound into the net. Melissa Pereman and Heather Tredway played a good hard checking game never giving up. With another Port penalty, Oshawa scored with two minutes left. Determined not to be defeated and with another penal- ty called on Port, Dana Hooker, Cara and Shona Moase stole the ring on a free pass and tore up the ice. With less than 10 seconds re- maining there was a massive hud- dle in front of Oshawa's net. With an open net in front of Shona and the goalie out of her net, she repeatedly tried to get a shot away but one of the Oshawa girls had a wicked hold of her stick and another had a grasp on the ring with Shona's stick in it. The buzzer rang and ended the game 5-4. You Port Perry girls are a very talented strong team. Look for high corners in the net and stay out of the penalty box and we should walk away with quite a few wins this year. SATURDAY NOVEMBER 23rd.
