un "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" Township ready to charge illegal roadside dumpers By Scott Anderson Scugog's bylaw enforcement officer says charges are being prepared against those dump- ing garbage illegally along the Ridges. Bill Henshall says the town- ship, along with the City of Oshawa, and the Township of Newcastle, are in the process of preparing charges that will identify parties responsible for illegal dumping along Boun- dary Road, a road that divides the three municipalities. For a number of years the municipalities have been frus- trated by the constant dumping of waste in the area, but have not been able to crack down on the guilty parties. Each time the area is cleaned up, a new Election day goes off without a hitch Earl Cuddie, administrator/ clerk for the Township of Scu- gog, says election day went off without a hitch. Mr. Cuddie says that of the 40 polls that were in operation during the day in Scugog, there was only "a minor clich" at one. This occurred during the re- porting period when the ballot count didn't match the number of votes cast. It was soon discov- ered that two slips were stuck together. Aside from that minor inci- dent, the rest of the day was un- eventful with the polls opening and closing on time. Tabulation of the votes was done efficiently. The township COLDWCLL 2F.\ J] (cl de) ran a parallel system to report the results using both a com- puter, as well as a hand written chart. The results of the polls were phoned in to the munici- pal office where they were tabu- lated and entered both into a computer, and recorded by hand. The results were then phoned to the Latcham Centre in Port Perry where the results were displayed both on a color monitor and also on a chart to enable the public to follow the scores. "I was really pleased with the overall results," he said. "The computer worked well." COUNTRY LANE "REALTY LTD. R® Hwy. 7A & High Street - Port Perry, Ont. It has become more of a problem lately with the high- er tippage fees being charged by the dumps. Recently the three munici- palities banded together to clean up the area. Two weeks ago, 'hey had the area com- pletely cleaned up and graded. But returned after the weekend to find more waste. This includ- ed roofing tiles, car parts, a toi- let and a bathroom vanity. On a recent tour of the area with Mr. Henshall, the Port Perry Star was taken to a num- ber of the areas which had been cleaned up. One area which Mr. Henshall had visited on Nov. 11 and found to be clean, had been littered when a return visit was made on Nov. 15. Among the items found were clothes, newspapers, a bath- room sink and vanity, and a number of medical syringes. But what else was found was a magazine with a name and ad- dress on it as well as a letter with another name. As a result of this evidence, and similar findings in other discoveries, Mr. Henshall says they will be able to serve sum- monses to these people very shortly. Mr. Henshall hopes the ac- tion the three municipalities are taking in convicting the re- sponsible parties serves as a de- terrent. Under the Provincial Offences Act the fine for dump- ing and littering is up to $5,000. ) But Mr. Henshall says he is not sure whether this will do enough. He says the municipal- ities are getting frustrated by the situation, as it is becoming costly to continually clean the area. isd BKm West of Simcoe St. on Hwy. #7 73 ve : % Scugog's Bylaw Enforcement Officer, Bill Henshall, says the problem of garbage illegally dumped Is becoming an ex- pensive problem.
